    • An optical electronic musical instrument device (“e-instrument”) that is configured to identify colors and output sounds that are associated with the identified color is disclosed. The e-instrument may detect colors using a color sensor and generate a color signal as a result. Additionally, the volume of the sound may be influenced by a motion signal generated by a motion sensor, wherein the lower or higher the motion signal's value corresponds to a lower or higher volume. The color and motion signals may be sent to one or more processors, either local or remote from the e-instrument, that generates or retrieves a sound signal based on the color and motion signals. The sound signal may then be transmitted to a speaker and the speaker outputs the sound signal accordingly. The sound signal may be any instrument, including a sound of a guitar, piano, drum, etc.

    • A computerized musical percussion instrument is disclosed.Markers carried by the musician are observed by an imager to produce a series of two dimensional images over the time of the performance.A processor receives the images and distinguishes between markers (e.g. left hand, right hand) by comparing the position and size of unidentified markers in the current image to the position and size of identified markers in preceding images.The processor analyzes each markers' movements and detects a drum hit when a marker undergoes a sharp reversal of its motion direction after reaching sufficient speed. The processor determines which drum the musician intends to hit by comparing the position and size of the marker at the instant of the hit to the position and size attributes of each drum. The processor outputs an audio signal for each hit, corresponding to the drum hit, with a volume determined by marker speed.

    • A performance apparatus 11 extends in its longitudinal direction to be held by a player with his or her hand. The performance apparatus is provided with a geomagnetic sensor 22 and an acceleration sensor 23 in its extending portion. CPU 21 gives an instruction to an electronic musical instrument 19 to generate a musical tone of a tone color at a timing when a position of the performance apparatus obtained by the geomagnetic sensor and acceleration sensor passes through a sound generation area defined in space, wherein the tone color of the musical tone corresponds to the sound generation area. The sound generation areas and corresponding tone colors are stored in an area/tone color table in RAM 26. Upon receipt of an instruction, the electronic musical instrument generates a musical tone having a tone color corresponding to the sound generation area.
