    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk comprising a plurality of servo tracks defined by servo sectors recorded around the circumference of the disk at a servo sampling frequency, and a servo control system operable to actuate a head over the disk by generating a control signal applied to an actuator. A first sinusoid is injected into the servo control system and a first DC component (dc1) is measured in the control signal. A second sinusoid is injected into the servo control system and a second DC component (dc2) is measured in the control signal, wherein the second sinusoid comprises a phase offset from the first sinusoid. A resonance mode of the servo control system is measured based on dc1 and dc2.

    • Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with a data detector that processes signals read from a storage device are described. According to one embodiment, a detector for detecting a data signal embedded in a read signal from a storage device includes a signal estimator configured to generate an estimate of the control signal from the read signal by sampling the read signal to determine characteristics of the control signal. The read signal includes the data signal and the control signal. The signal estimator uses the characteristics to calculate the estimate of the control signal. The detector also includes a cancellation unit configured to produce the data signal by cancelling the estimate of the control signal from the read signal.

    • In a method for providing an estimate of a head position for a disk drive, a readback signal is filtered. The readback signal includes a first position signal component corresponding to a first position pattern on a disk, and includes a second position signal component corresponding to a second position pattern on the disk. Filtering the readback signal includes using a filter determined based on statistical information regarding a noise component of the readback signal. An estimate of an amplitude of the first position signal component is generated based on the filtered readback signal, and an estimate of an amplitude of the second position signal component is generated based on the filtered readback signal. An estimate of a head position with respect to a track on the disk is generated based on the estimate of the amplitude of the first position signal component and the estimate of the amplitude of the second position signal component.

    • A method for correcting a track pitch error in servo tracks written on a magnetic recording media coupled with a disk surface, by using a subsequent servo-write pass, comprises propagating servo tracks across the magnetic recording media in a previous servo-write pass. The servo tracks have radial positioning servo code. The servo tracks enable a magnetic transducer to be positioned to at least one radial position on the magnetic recording media. At least one corrected radial reference point is calculated for the track pitch error written on the magnetic recording media, by identifying at least one inconsistency between a mechanical response of an actuator and the track pitch. A corrected location for at least one servo track is identified. At least one new servo track at the corrected location is propagated with the subsequent servo-write pass. Optimum data track distribution across the disk surface and optimum reading and writing of data to and from the magnetic recording media is enabled.

    • Disclosed is a disk drive and method to characterize misaligned servo wedges. The disk drive includes an actuator arm, a head, a disk, and a servo controller. The head is connected to a distal end of the actuator arm in which the actuator arm is rotatable about a pivot to move the head radially over the disk. The servo controller is used to characterize misaligned servo wedges by implementing operations including: commanding the head to track follow on a track; measuring wedge-to-wedge time (WTWT) values corresponding to time intervals between identified servo wedges; calculating wedge-to-wedge time (WTWT) variations for the measured WTWT values; and characterizing the calculated WTWT variations, wherein, characterizing the calculated WTWT variations for the track includes utilizing a WTWT variation modeling function to model the WTWT variations.
