    • Recovery of hydrocarbons, such as petroleum products, from a liquid or solid substrate is facilitated by the use of microwave energy to energize and separate molecular bonds between the hydrocarbons and the substrate. A radio frequency (RF) applicator delivers microwave energy to a treatment volume containing an emulsion of a hydrocarbon and a substrate. Delivering the microwave energy to the emulsion facilitates separation of the hydrocarbon and substrate molecules into layers. Hydrocarbons and other products can then be recovered from their respective layers. The treatment volume may be located either above or below ground. The RF applicator may include an antenna body with slots formed substantially parallel to one another in a substantially horizontal orientation. The RF applicator efficiently delivers microwave energy into the treatment volume. Substantially all of the power supplied to the RF applicator is radiated, with very little power reflected internally within the RF applicator.

    • A wireless communication device and method for identifying a container, or communication information about a container, using a slot in the container as an antenna. The device includes a wireless communication device for transmitting information regarding the container. The container includes an outer wall forming a rim and a slot between the rim edge and the outer wall that is circular and continues without boundaries. The wireless communication device is coupled to the slot to provide the slot antenna for communications. An impedance matching network is additionally provided to make the operating frequency of the slot substantially the same as the operating frequency of the wireless communication device. Alternatively, shorting posts may be placed in the slot to define boundaries of the slot to match the operating frequency of the slot to the operating frequency of the antenna. Variable impedance matching is provided between the wireless communication device and the slot.

    • An antenna (100) for RF communications. The antenna includes a radiating member (102) which is substantially tubular so as to define a cavity (104) therein. The radiating member (102) is made of a conductive material having a non-conductive slot (106) extending from a first portion (108) of the radiating member (102) to a second portion (110). An impedance matching device (120) is electrically connected to the radiating member (102) via a conductor (134) to match an impedance of the radiating member (102) with an impedance of a signal source or an impedance of a load. The impedance matching device (120), the conductor (134), and at least a portion of the radiating member radiating element (102) can formed from a single conductive sheet, or molded or extruded as a single conductive structure.
