    • A method for adjusting the radiation direction of an antenna, which uses a plurality of uniformly spaced diffraction gratings formed in the waveguide of the antenna while adjusting the maximum radiation direction of radiation waves emerging from the diffraction gratings and varying the length of crystal lattices in the diffraction gratings, thereby achieving an improvement in the directivity of the radiation waves and an adjustment in the radiation direction of radiation waves. In accordance with this method, it is possible to vary the radiation direction of an electronic wave passing through the antenna by varying the interval of crystal lattices in a region where the diffraction gratings exist. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain a narrow beam width characteristic. The diffraction gratings are made of a piezo-electric material. Using the characteristic of such a piezo-electric material, it is possible to vary the interval of crystal lattices in the diffraction grating region in an electrical manner, thereby adjusting the radiation direction of beams.

    • A microwave phase shifter comprise a dielectric waveguide having a flat side and a moving conductor plane member substantially parallel to the waveguide side. Piezoelectric means are provided to move the plane member with respect to the waveguide side between a portion relatively remote from the waveguide side and an other position substantially in contact with the waveguide side. The piezoelectric means consists preferably of a stack of piezoelectric members supplied by a variable d.c. power source. Owing to the piezoelectric means for moving the conductor plane member, a variable phase shift is continuously adjusted. Such a phase shifter can be as an antenna network when the dielectric waveguide contains groups of radiator perturbations, such as conductor strips, respectively controlled by one or several piezoelectric means carrying conductor plates facing waveguide portions including the perturbations groups.

    • A symmetrical trough waveguide antenna array is provided wherein a section of trough waveguide has spaced radiating mode conversion portions. Each of the radiating mode conversion portions includes a member of gyromagnetic material spaced between the center fin and one of the side walls of the trough waveguide and a member of dielectric material spaced between the center fin and the opposite side wall. When an appropriate DC magnetic field is applied to the gyromagnetic member, signals propagating in one direction along the trough waveguide are converted from the even to the odd mode and consequently radiation of some of the signals occurs at the spaced portions of the waveguide. The section of trough waveguide further includes phase shifter portions. Each of the phase shifting portions includes a pair of members of gyromagnetic material with one of the pair between the center fin and one side wall and the other of the pair between the center fin and the side wall opposite the one side wall. When appropriate DC magnetic field bias is applied to the pair of gyromagnetic members associated with the phase shifter portion, a difference in phase occurs between the spaced radiating mode converting elements.
