    • A breaker assembly for use in conjunction with a surge or lightning arrestor of the type that includes at least one varistor. The varistor circuit is enclosed within a substantially airtight housing that includes a hinged panel. A cantilevered arm is fixed to the hinged panel and includes, adjacent its free end, an aperture for interlocking a post. A conductive disk is fixed to the post and positioned vertically with respect to conductive arms to complete a circuit that includes the surge arrestor. The action of upper and lower springs, in conjunction with the post, serves to close or open such circuit. The position of the post is locked by the interaction of a notch therein with the cantilevered arm so that the opening and closing of the breaker switch is regulated by the attitude of the front panel of the housing that is, in turn, responsive to varistor-generated vapor pressure therein.

    • A lightning surge protector, comprises a current limiting element in a pressure-proof housing. The pressure-proof housing is composed of a conductive material and coupled with an upper electrode member. Also, a self arc-extinguishing LSP comprises a current limiting element and upper and lower electrode members housed and fixed in a conductive pressure-proof housing opened at its lower portion through a suspension structure composed of a suspension rod. The outside and inside of the housing are covered and filled with an insulator, so that, upon occurrence of an internal arc due to a short-circuit fault or the like, the energy due to the arc causes the lower electrode member to break the insulator in the vicinity of an opening portion of the conductive pressure-proof housing so as to electrically connect the conductive pressure-proof housing to a part of the lower electrode member.

    • A lightning arrester having an insulating cylinder which contains resistance elements made of zinc oxide which have a nonlinear voltage-current characteristic are stored. The insulating cylinder is fixed at least one sealing member having passages which connect the inside space of the insulating cylinder with the outside space thereof. These passages are covered with a material adapted to be softened or melted by a heat and are therefore closed in an air-tight manner. The arrester also includes an arc guide for producing arc type spark short-circuit externally of the insulating cylinder due to gas jetted from the passages upon an arc accident in the insulatng cylinder.

    • A voltage surge arrester disposed in a metal enclosure pipe containing an insulating gas is provided with a gas vent adjacent the line voltage terminal end of the arrester for venting gases which are generated inside the arrester. The vent is directed toward, and is in close proximity to, the inside surface of the metal housing. Upon failure of the arrester, the venting establishes a short circuit at the arrester line terminal, which both initiates the operation of a protective current interruption device elsewhere in the system and instantly diverts fault current from the arrester itself. As a result, fracturing of the porcelain, which would otherwise result from further pressure buildup in the arrester or from thermal shock, is avoided.
