    • A communications service (and components thereof) have one or more communication addresses (e.g. short codes, telephone numbers, IM names/domains, IP addresses, etc.) for receiving text-based messages, a service platform for carry out a number of communication services, and a database of registered subscribers. Subscribers access the database preferably through a web-enabled interface. A subscriber associates a selected communications service with a unique alphanumeric code and conveys the alphanumeric code to other individuals as desired. The individual enters the alphanumeric code as part of a text-based message communicated to the communications address of the service. The service includes logic that receives the text-based messages over the diverse messaging formats and processes the text embedded in each message to extract the alphanumeric code therein. The logic accesses the database to identify the subscriber and communication service that is uniquely associated with the particular alphanumeric code received as part of a given text-based message. The logic then controls the service platform to carry out the communication service that is associated with the alphanumeric code and subscriber. The plurality of communications services supported by the service platform and alphanumeric codes preferably include at least one of voice call functions, voice mail functions, text message functions, text broadcast functions, and media delivery functions.

    • A network membership management protocol manages membership in a peer-to-peer networking environment. To join the peer-to-peer network, a new client is introduces itself to a deputy node assigned by the server to act as a point of contact for the new client. The deputy node forwards subscription requests to other neighboring nodes which probabilistically determine whether to accept the subscription request from the new client or forward the message to other neighboring nodes. In this way, a new client gains connections to a random subset of nodes on the network. The membership management protocol further includes a protocol for reassigning neighboring relationships between nodes when an active node leaves the network. Furthermore, the membership management protocol allows nodes to periodically re-subscribe to the network in order to rebalance the network graph.

    • A communication session between a user of a communication network and a communication system is controlled. The communication network comprises a first network and a second network. The communication system operates on the first network. A session request packet is transmitted from a device of the user to a first node in the first network. The session is initiated with the communication system at the first node responsive to receiving the session request. During the session, a calling identity is provided from the first node to the device and used by the device during a communication event between the user and an entity. The calling identity is used to establish a connection between the device and a second node in the second network. The calling identity is associated with an address of the entity. Upon termination of the session, the calling identity is disassociated from the address of the entity.
