    • A system, apparatus, and method are provided for operating a peer-to-peer communication environment. The environment includes one or more clusters of peer devices, wherein devices in a single cluster are organized into a logical hierarchy under an anchor master (at the root of the hierarchy) and any number of synchronization masters; other devices are non-master devices. Synchronization parameters established by the anchor master and disseminated throughout the hierarchy enable the clusters' devices to rendezvous, discover peers and services, and communicate among themselves. The anchor master may adjust the synchronization parameters to avoid conflict with another hierarchy. Each device issues beacons (e.g., heartbeats, discovery beacons) that identify the number of devices synchronized with the reporting device, which allows the anchor master to calculate the total number of cluster members. Devices may also report details of a neighboring cluster (e.g., its synchronization parameters) via a beacon or some other communication.

    • A multi-layer peer-to-peer (P2P) capability is provided. A multi-layer P2P system includes a plurality of P2P networks associated with a plurality of hierarchical layers. For example, a first hierarchical layer may include a first P2P network including all peer nodes of the P2P system, and a second hierarchical layer may include a plurality of second P2P networks where the second P2P networks of the second hierarchical layer include respective subsets of the peer nodes of the first P2P network. The second P2P networks of the second hierarchical layer may be organized based on one or more characteristics (e.g., the geographic locations of the peer nodes, the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with which the peer nodes are associated, and the like). A node participating in the P2P system joins the first P2P network of the P2P system and one of the second P2P networks of the P2P system. The node may then interact with the first P2P network and/or the second P2P network for performing various functions within the P2P system.

A method includes receiving an advertisement from a second overlay network, determining a size of the second overlay network, performing a self search on the second overlay network based on a persistent node identifier, if the size of the second overlay network is greater than the size of a first overlay network, and joining the second overlay network if the persistent node identifier is not part of the second overlay network. An apparatus includes a transceiver to receive an advertisement from a second overlay network, and a processor coupled to the transceiver to determine a size of the second overlay network, perform a self search on the second overlay network based on a persistent node identifier, and join the second overlay network if the persistent node identifier is not part of the second overlay network.
