    • An apparatus for interfacing an analog telephone in an ISDN terminal adapter is able to independently perform call set-up regardless of a personal computer's operation, while being provided with ISDN audio service via an existing analog telephone. The apparatus includes a combocodec for converting a digital audio signal from the co-processor into an analog audio signal to supply it to a telephone, and for digitizing an analog audio signal from the telephone to supply it to the co-processor; a ring generator for generating a ring signal under the control of the co-processor; and a DC-voltage converter for generating a telephone driving voltage. A subscriber line interfacing circuit (SLIC) is connected to a telephone, a DC-voltage converter, and a combocodec, for supplying the telephone driving voltage to the telephone, interfacing the audio signals between the telephone and combocodec, and sensing the office line to determine the telephone's hook state. A relay is connected among the SLIC, ring generator, and the telephone, for supplying the ring signal from the ring generator to the telephone under the control of the SLIC. A tone decoder is provided for decoding a dual tone multi-frequency signal from among the audio signals from the SLIC to the combocodec, and transmitting the decoded signal to the co-processor.

    • A method for initializing ISDN adapter cards installed within a workstation having a main processor and an ISDN primary adapter for connecting the ISDN adapter cards to an ISDN primary gateway. Each ISDN adapter card has circuits for handling at least one B-channel, and a first processor associated with memory storage. The ISDN primary adapter includes a second processor associated with a second memory storage. In response to the reception of a specific polling pattern transmitted to each adapter card by the primary adapter, a pattern is transmitted to the workstation processor for requesting the loading of the second memory storage with operational code transferred from the workstation to the ISDN adapter card. The ISDN primary adapter, in response to the request pattern received by the main processor, transmits a second pattern via the ISDN adapter card that transmitted the first pattern, so that the main processor in the workstation and the processor in the ISDN primary adapter recognize the ISDN adapter card that transmitted the patterns to the workstation and to the ISDN primary adapter as the master ISDN adapter card for transmission of control information on the D-channel.

    • A data terminal interface for a terminal adapter and an attached computer provides complete flexibility and control of information in a communication environment for a user. Communications between the terminal adapter and a digital network may be provided in existing digital systems, such as either the Digital Communications Protocol or Integrated Services Digital Network system, for example. The data terminal interface facilitates the exchange of information between the terminal adapter and the computer via an asynchronous data module in the terminal adapter. Through the data terminal interface, the computer is able to directly control user interface circuitry in the terminal adapter by responding to and sending unlimited information to this interface circuitry since conformance to a digital protocol is not required for message traffic between these two units. Also the data terminal interface permits all functions that a user is able to perform at the terminal adapter, such as going off-hook, pressing a button, etc., to be performed by the computer and provided to the network. Specific applications such as call screening, custom alerting and automatic call distribution are easily achieved through use of the data terminal interface.
