    • An interface circuit for a switch array having an array of switches, each closeable to couple a row conductor of a plurality of row conductors to a column conductor of one or more column conductors, comprises a current generator and a current detector. The current generator has a plurality of row interface ports for coupling to different ones of the row conductors and is arranged to generate a switch array current for coupling to the row interface ports, the switch array current having a different one of a plurality of different switch array current magnitudes for different ones of the row interface ports, and generate one or more reference currents each having a different reference current magnitude. The current detector has one or more column interface ports for coupling to the one or more column conductors and is arranged to detect the switch array current flowing at any one of the one or more column interface ports, and generate a row indication indicative of which of the row conductors a closed one of the switches is coupled to by determining which one of the switch array current magnitudes the detected switch array current has by comparing the detected switch array current with the one or more reference currents.

    • A switching matrix connects to an access network and a set of at least two operator networks. A controller performs a method of establishing new connections across the switching matrix in response to new connection requests. The new connection requests involve a sub-set of the set of operator networks. The controller determines if the new connections can be established across the switching matrix by rearranging only existing connections across the switching matrix to the sub-set of operator networks and, in response, establishes the at least one new connection. Otherwise, the controller rearranges existing connections across the switching matrix to at least one other of the set of operator networks to establish the new connections. The controller minimizes the number of other operator networks which are involved when rearranging existing connections. The switching matrix can be a Clos switching matrix.

    • An interworking function (IWF) for a first and second protocol based network, for example, an H.323 protocol based network and an SIP protocol based network comprises an interworking gateway server including a state machine for defining each call processing state and a translation table for use in translating addresses formatted in each protocol. A method of interworking for use in interworking between said first protocol based network and said second protocol based network comprises the steps of receiving at said interworking gateway server serving said first and second protocol based networks a request from an endpoint in the first or second protocol based networks, establishing a state machine in memory whereby, for each state of said state machine, a message associated with that state is categorized as one of a triggering message, a non-triggering message and an error message, establishing a translation table in said memory whereby an address formatted in said first protocol has a one-for-one correspondence with an address formatted in said second protocol, processing said request in accordance with said translation table and said state machine and permitting communication between said first and second endpoints utilizing a realtime transport protocol. In the event media is terminated at said interworking gateway server, the interworking gateway server, in one embodiment, comprises a media switching fabric for switching media terminated at the gateway to an addressed endpoint capable of receiving it.
