    • A switching matrix connects to an access network and a set of at least two operator networks. A controller performs a method of establishing new connections across the switching matrix in response to new connection requests. The new connection requests involve a sub-set of the set of operator networks. The controller determines if the new connections can be established across the switching matrix by rearranging only existing connections across the switching matrix to the sub-set of operator networks and, in response, establishes the at least one new connection. Otherwise, the controller rearranges existing connections across the switching matrix to at least one other of the set of operator networks to establish the new connections. The controller minimizes the number of other operator networks which are involved when rearranging existing connections. The switching matrix can be a Clos switching matrix.

    • Apparatus and methods relating to synchronization of communication equipment are disclosed. Synchronization information received from a bonded communication link can be used to synchronize local and/or remote communication equipment, such as femtocell sites coupled to nodes in a ring network. This may involve isolating a frequency reference signal from a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) communication link which is a constituent link of a bonded communication link, for example. In a ring network, received synchronization information could be used in synchronizing a locally connected installation of communication equipment, and passed for transmission in the ring network for synchronizing other communication equipment. Such dropping and passing of an analog frequency reference signal could be applied in networks having other topologies as well. At least some embodiments of the invention are applicable to optical links. One or more dedicated wavelengths of an optical link could be used to transfer a frequency reference signal, for example. Other functions, such as quality monitoring, quality reporting, and/or predictive traffic forwarding may be provided in some embodiments.

    • Apparatus for placing a plurality of computer-assisted compressed-voice subscriber calls using a circuit-switched signal path in a distributed telecommunications network. A plurality of vocoders receive voice data from respective subscriber voice devices and output substantially continuous compressed-voice data signals which are arranged by a plurality of packetizers into compressed-voice data packets. A plurality of network adapters send the compressed-voice data packets to a circuit-switched telephone network. A plurality of sequencers remove the substantially continuous compressed-voice data signals from the compressed-voice data packets. A multiplexer coupled to the sequencers combines the compressed-voice data signals into a compressed-voice data package and a signal injector injects the compressed-voice data package into a prearranged time slot of a conventional circuit-switched signal path. Upon arrival at the destination, the time slot carrying the compressed-voice data is disassembled and compressed-voice data is routed to destination subscriber premises. Circuit-switched telephone networks can now be employed to carry compressed voice, allowing simultaneous voice and data communications, while still providing low cost and high quality voice service.
