    • The present invention allows characteristics of individual distributed telephone sets to be controlled by a central telephone switch. In one embodiment, configuration files are stored locally on the phone set, but control of the configuration files is provided by the phone switch. Alternatively, configurations files may be stored on the phone switch. When modifying the configurations of a particular phone set, the phone switch dynamically determines the options that are available based on factors such as phone set model and additional hardware connected to the phone set. The phone switch provides a menu or other means for modifying characteristics of the phone set. The menu provides options only for characteristics available on the phone set. The user of the phone set interacts with the menu to confirm or modify the characteristics of particular phone set.

    • An interactive display arrangement for easily moving between menu screens in a display device at a telephone terminal is provided. Ease of movement between the menu screens for certain logical functions is facilitated by a multipurpose screen prompt having a single softkey message. This softkey message is commonly displayed in each plurality of sets of softkey messages displayed in associated menu screens, with multiple tasks being assigned to this softkey label message. Each assigned task for the softkey message is determined by each menu screen in which the softkey message is displayed. By being able to use a single screen prompt for multiple functions, simplicity and screen space in a small interactive display is conserved. Also, the user of the display is able to move easily among available menu screens in the interactive display arrangement without the need for detailed knowledge of the menu hierarchy.

    • A key telephone system includes a plurality of key telephone stations, at least one of the key telephone stations being of the kind which includes CO buttons for specifying CO/PBX lines and DSS buttons for specifying the intercom designations for the key telephone stations to be interconnected via the intercom lines, and being selectively operable as a control station. The key telephone system also includes a switching network, a switching control unit and a system memory unit, the switching control unit controlling the switching network and key telephone stations in accordance with system data stored in the system memory unit. The system memory unit is provided with memory accessed by operation of DSS and CO buttons when the key telephone system is in the system data set mode. Each DSS button designates at least one memory location dedicated to the key telephone station identified by that DSS button. Each CO button designates a dedicated portion of each of the memory locations, for storing information relative to that CO line. Information relative to a CO line and designated for a particular key telephone station is set into memory by setting the control key telephone station into system data set mode, and operating the DSS button corresponding to the key telephone station to be controlled in accordance with new CO line information and by operating the CO button corresponding to the CO line about which information is to be entered into memory for the designated key telephone station. CO line information, such as ringing assignment and call restriction assignment, is thus written into memory by operating the DSS buttons designating the key telephone stations whose CO line information is to be changed, and the CO buttons to designate the specific CO lines identified for CO line information changes.

    • The present invention relates to a communication apparatus for transmitting and receiving analog voice and digital data signals to and from a telephone line or telephone lines to one or more users, in the same session. The apparatus has a telephony apparatus for transmitting or receiving the voice signals and a modem for transmitting or receiving the data signal. A switch is interposed between the telephone line and the modem and the telephony apparatus. The switch can be placed in a first position or in a second position. In the first position, the telephone apparatus is connected to the telephone lines and transmits and receives voice signals. In addition, the modem is connected to receive data carrier signals that precede digital data signals and follow the digital data signals to and from the medium. A control circuit comprising a microprocessor, controls the switch such that it can be switched automatically between the first position and the second position. The microprocessor changes the switch from the first position to the second position when the apparatus transmits digital data signals or receives the carrier signal indicating that digital data signals will be received by the apparatus. Upon termination of the transmission of the digital data signals from the apparatus or upon termination of the reception of digital data signals, the microprocessor automatically switches the switch back to the first position whereby voice communication can be continued.
