    • The multifunction operating device (10), which is designed particularly as an input device for monitor-controlled devices such as computers, information or entertainment technology devices, vehicle components or generally for a man-machine interface, is provided with a manually operable operating unit (12), which can be rotated about an axis of rotation (16), depressed along the axis of rotation (16) in a flexible manner, and laterally displaced in a substantially radial direction in respect to the axis of rotation (16). The operating unit (12) has a rotary sensor (19) for detecting the current rotational position and a pressure sensor (20) for detecting a depression movement. The operating device (10) also has a movement sensor unit (22) for detecting the direction of a substantially radial movement of the operating unit (12) during the lateral movement of said unit. The movement sensor unit (22) has a driver element (24), which can be movably guided in a radial plane and to which the operating unit (12) is mechanically coupled and which can be moved along during the movement of the operating unit (12). The movement sensor unit (22) has a tilting element (32), which is connected to the driver element (24) in an articulated manner and which can be tilted when the driver element (24) is moved. The movement sensor unit (22) also has at least one sensor for detecting the tilted position of the tilting element (32) during a lateral movement of the operating unit (12).

    • A manual control device includes an actuation member which is supported on a switching rod for pivoting about at least one actuation member pivot axis which extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the switching rod. Furthermore, the switching rod is movably supported relative to a base member of the manual control device about or along a plurality of switching rod movement axes, there being provided restoring means, by means of which the actuation member which has been redirected out of a rest position about the actuation member pivot axis can be restored to the rest position. The restoring means have at least two resilient elements which are active counter to redirection of the actuation member from the rest position about the actuation member pivot axis and which are arranged radially opposite each other relative to the longitudinal axis of the switching rod.

    • One embodiment is a handle supporting a users hand having a large surface for the palm, a trough for the thumb, a protrusion between the thumb and first finger and flared edges to keep the hand from sliding. A support surface is coupled to the stem of a wheelchair joystick gimbal and is biased in forward driving. A second embodiment is a wheelchair joystick movable between forward and reverse positions while maintaining the same orientation relative to the user. A supporting surface is pivotally mounted to a gimbal stem fixed to the wheelchair. The handle pivots to remain in a neutral position with movement of the joystick. A bi-directional spring biases the handle toward a neutral position. A third embodiment comprises a pivot coupled to a gimbal stem and a cup coupled to the user. The assembly is completed by placing the cup over the pivot allowing for movement therebetween.
