    • A microwave radiator formed at least partially of a radioactive substance and adapted to simultaneously deliver microwave energy and nuclear radiation to living tissue. The radiator is incorporated into an interstitial or intracavitary probe. The radiator is a helical electrical conductor, formed of a radioactive substance such as iridium.sup.192, and electrically connecting a central electrical conductor to a coaxial electrically-conducting jacket. Alternatively, a microwave antenna is formed as part of a probe with a cavity adapted to receive sources of ionizing radiation. Preferably, the cavity is part of a channel through a conduit carrying the probe, the channel being connected to a device for delivering ionizing radiation sources to the probe after positioning at the target tissue and after a heating regime. The device is able to remove the ionizing sources while leaving the microwave source in place for an additional heating regime. Other therapeutic regimes are facilitated by the combination.

    • A catheter for use in treating tumors is flexible and relatively small in diameter so that it can be inserted interstitially into the tumor mass. A conductor is provided along the length of the catheter and is electrically insulated except for a small length thereof which is adapted to be received within the tumor volume. By placing at least a pair of such catheters within the tumor mass and by connecting the conductors to a high frequency power source a heat producing current can be generated through the tumor tissue between the exposed portions of the catheter to damage the tumor cells. In addition, each catheter includes an axial passage permitting radioactive seeds or other tumor treating materials to be inserted within the tumor mass to cause further damage to and ultimately necrosis of the tumor without significantly affecting the adjacent healthy tissue of the body.

    • A speech recognition data collection arrangement in which audio sounds spoken by the user are supplemented with lip and mouth movement information obtained from a combination of a light emitting diode and photodiode disposed immediately before the user's face is disclosed. The lip and mouth movement photo information is obtained in the form of an AC coupled amplitude modulated carrier waveform which results from energization of the light emitting diode from a pulsating or alternating current component inclusive source of electrical energy. The lip and mouth movement amplitude modulated carrier waveform is processed with filtering and envelope detection and communicated to a programmed digital computer for the purpose of dual-channel audio and photo based accomplishment of human speech recognition.
