    • A sorter for sorting pieces of various diameters and lengths made up of a pair of shafts spatially disposed in parallel within a horizontal plane, each of these shafts having a tapered core to which is connected to a pair of flights. When the shafts are rotated, items placed upon the flights of the shafts are aligned and moved toward the second end of the shaft. When a piece reaches a location where it can tip upon one of the flights and the end of the piece no longer contacts a part of the adjoining flight, the piece will tip. When this piece now traveling between the flights reaches a location where the space between the tapered portions of the cones is sufficiently large so as to allow the potato to fall between the cones, the piece will fall and has thus been sorted for diameter. Larger items thus are sorted to a location further from the first end of the device and smaller items are sorted to a position closer to the first end of the device.

    • The invention relates to a device for sorting of bent elongated articles, in particular of rods or tubes, which have a measuring span with an inclined plane, down which the articles roll, and a separating system provided at the outlet end of the measuring span for sorting of the bent articles from the straight articles, whereby a pressure gauge is arranged in the measuring span in order to determine the force of the rolling-off articles onto the inclined plane. Furthermore the invention relates to a corresponding method for sorting of bent elongated articles, in particular of rods or tubes, where an article to be tested rolls off on a measuring span with an inclined plane, whereby the force of the rolling-off articles onto the inclined plane is measured in the measuring span and is evaluated regarding a curvature and the articles are sorted by means of the evaluated signal through a separating system provided at the outlet end of the measuring span.

    • A method sorts out defect-free elements blanked out of a metal sheet for a belt for use in a continuously variable transmission. Each of the elements has a body and a head joined to the body with a pair of recesses defined therebetween. The elements are stacked in a transverse direction thereof into an annular form and bundled together by an assembly of stacked endless metal rings inserted in the recesses into a belt for use in a continuously variable transmission. The elements are inserted into a passage having a predetermined width to sort out and deliver those elements which have passed through the passage to a feed path. Respective images of the elements which have been delivered to the feed path are analyzed while in the feed path to compare the images with a reference element image. Elements which have entrapped foreign matter, outer profile deformations, and defects are rejected from the feed path, and other elements are fed through the feed path. The fed elements are stacked and arrayed in a transverse direction thereof downstream of the feed path. The arrayed elements are passed through gages having a shape complementary to a required shape for the recesses of the elements, and those elements which have passed through the gage are sorted out as defect-free elements.
