    • A consumable thermal torch for cutting through materials includes a first elongated generally cylindrical member adapted to receive an associated supply of oxygen into a first end and react with the oxygen at a second end. A second member has a hollow profiled similarly adapted to receive an associated supply of oxygen into a first end and react with the oxygen at a second end. The second member is received radially within the first member and is substantially axially coextensive therewith. At least one first gas flow passage is formed radially between the second member and the first member. At least one second gas flow passage is formed within the hollow profile of the second member and extends from the first end of the second member to the second end of the second member.

    • An improved exothermic cutting system is presented mounted upon a standard Alice pack frame reduced by three inches for additional comfort and safety to the wearer. A lightweight aluminum plate is welded to the Alice pack for stability while serving as a rigid platform upon which the cylinders, manifold, battery ignition and rod compartment is secured. The backpack design provides oxygen via an oxygen hose to the cutting torch. The design also provides a dual extruded electrical cable connected to a 12 volt battery at one end, and an igniter head at the other end, necessary to initiate the exothermic reaction.Overall, the improved backpack system allows for greater comfort and convenience. The improves system also protects the components from damage during deployment. In numerous trials, military breaching personnel, police officers and emergency response personnel have found the new backpack cutting system an indispensable tool for gaining rapid entry or rapid egress in diverse military and commercial settings.The dual, high pressure, Kevlar-wrapped cylinders, with high pressure manifold, provides greater cutting pressure to melt through thick materials in less time than existing exothermic cutting systems. The additional pressure reserve in the cylinders allows for longer cutting duration, indispensable for military and commercial cutting assignments. The modified high pressure manifold provides for augmented capacity in addition to the ability to fill the tanks in situ.

    • A fuel gas and preheat oxygen mixer for a gas torch comprises a bore in the torch head receiving a gas mixing insert having an axially thin peripheral gas mixing recess which receives preheat oxygen and fuel gas from corresponding manifold areas across radially thin metering passages. The gases are mixed in the mixing recess and delivered to the torch tip through delivery passages which, together with the mixing recess and metering passages provide gas flow paths having abrupt directional changes, all of which cooperatively resist flashbacks during use of the torch.

    • A thermochemical scarfing apparatus is disclosed which allows a greater diagonal standoff distance from the metal workpiece during preheating. The operating steps of the apparatus includes preheating the end of the metal workpiece, and then scarfing the workpiece by directing a scarfing oxygen stream onto the workpiece at an acute angle and while moving the workpiece past the oxygen outlet port. The preheating step includes generating a high speed stream of oxidizing gas and a concentric stream of fuel gas coaxially about the central stream, so that the momentum of the central stream is maintained. As a result, the effective flame heating distance may be extended, and the manifold and head assembly which supports the preheating gas nozzles may be moved back from the workpiece a significant standoff distance so as to avoid damage from dislodged molten metal slag.

    • A method for producing a molten puddle on the surface of a metal workpiece to be scarfed consists of igniting a mixture of fuel gas and oxygen. The resultant flame is used for heating a steel wire to a temperature of from 900.degree. to 1450.degree. C., whereupon the steel wire is intermittently fed into a stream of scarfing oxygen to produce droplets of molten metal, which are then transferred by a flow of scarfing oxygen on to the work surface. There is provided apparatus for carrying into effect the above method, which comprises a housing having ducts for supplying a fuel gas and oxygen formed on its periphery; an additional duct for supplying a fuel gas being made in the central part of the housing; a duct for feeding steel wire is provided in the housing in coaxial arrangement with the additional fuel gas supply duct; a scarfing oxygen feeding duct formed in the housing is interposed between the oxygen supply duct and the additional fuel gas supply duct. The duct for feeding a scarfing oxygen is made in the form of a tapered annular slot arranged to permit the stream of scarfing oxygen to be directed at one point on the surface of steel wire.
