    • Centering elements for effectively reducing the clearance between a shaft and a rotatable element, such as a blade-fixing flange of a dicing saw for semiconductor substrates or carrier substrates, installable thereon are disclosed. In addition, the centering elements may be used to substantially align a center of mass of a rotatable element installed onto the shaft with the axis of rotation of the shaft. The centering element may position the center of mass of a rotatable element at a position that is in substantial alignment with the axis of rotation. Methods for assembling rotatable elements onto shafts and methods for balancing such rotatable elements are also disclosed. Multiple fixtures as well as multiple centering elements may be employed. In addition, one centering element may position more than one fixture.

    • Saw apparatus including an elongate power-driven saw arbor and a circular saw-supporting collar encircling the arbor and axially slidable thereon. The collar is moved axially on the arbor to shift the position of the saw by an elongate compression-transmitting shifter bar received in a peripheral channel in the arbor. A detent plate is attached to the shifter bar. The plate rides in an interior portion of the arbor channel of greater width than the main portion thereof, so it can restrain centrifugal force-induced radial motion of the shifter bar with respect to the arbor during rotation thereof. The shifter bar is of generally rectangular cross-section, and has radially extending recesses therein. The bar is connected to a shifter mechanism by a shoulder bolt, the shoulder of which is received in complementary cylindrical recesses in one end of the shifter bar and in a sleeve in the shifter mechanism, whereby the bolt permits no axial or circumferential movement between bar and shifter mechanism. The opposite end of the shifter bar is received in a slot extending between opposed faces of the saw-supporting collar. This end also includes a pair of detents, one each being disposed at each end of the slot, whereby this end of the shifter bar is connected to the saw-supporting collar with no axial or circumferential movement possible therebetween. The saw-supporting collar includes an annular portion which supports the saw at the precise axial midpoint thereof.

    • A multiple head gang saw has a plurality of moveable saw heads (12, 14) providing variable width cutting, and a single magnetostrictive displacement transducer (40) sensing displacement of all of the saw heads. The transducer sender unit (42) is mounted to a transverse cross beam (10), and a magnetostrictive rod (44) extends from the sender unit along and parallel to the cross beam. A plurality of pairs of electromagnets (62, 64, 87, 89) are mounted to respective saw heads proximate the magnetostrictive rod. Switching circuitry (116) selectively energizes a chosen electromagnet pair and de-energizes the remaining electromagnet pairs such that only the chosen electromagnet pair generates a magnetic field interacting with the signal in the rod from the sender unit, such that the displacement transducer indicates the distance from the sender unit to the chosen electromagnet pair and its respective saw head along the cross beam.
