    • A single-pass ink ribbon and a multi-pass ink ribbon are incorporated in a single recording apparatus. An identification mark is attached to one end of the single-pass ribbon (or the multi-pass ink ribbon) so that a ribbon sensor can discriminate two kinds of ribbon from each other to find out which one is used for the printing. With the result of the discrimination, a controller selects an appropriate program to set up a printing condition for the ribbon being used for the printing. A thermal head temperature, a degree of wear of the ribbon and a black ratio of the ribbon may also be taken in account in determining the printing condition. If the thermal head temperature is used, one temperature table is selected from a number of temperature tables which are prepared in advance for respective temperature. The printing condition is determined such that the printing density is maintained as long as the same ink ribbon is used. If the multi-pass ink ribbon is used for the printing, the ink ribbon is pulled back to a position from which the first printing starts, upon the completion of the printing operation.

    • A typewriter or similar machine with a ribbon and, if required, a correction tape on a pivotable support which can be lifted or lowered, the ribbon or the correction tape being movable in steps. The pivoting of the ribbon is necessary in order to give a view of the typed text. Since it is selectively possible to type or to correct, it is necessary to lift the support for the ribbon or the correction tape to different levels, so that the particular ribbon required is opposite the line to be printed. The transport of the ribbons as well as the lifting of the support is performed by means of a reciprocation-rotation motor. The respective rotational movement of the reciprocation-rotation motor is preferably transferred to one of the ribbons by toothed wheels. The ribbon can be moved on far enough so that a fresh ribbon surface is available. The same can be done for the correction tape. Depending on whether typing or correction is to take place, the support is pivoted by a set angular amount by means of the displaceable motor shaft, so that either the ribbon or the correction ribbon are at the level of the line to be printed. A simple construction with only a few components is assured by this design. Overriding clutches assure that, depending on the rotational direction of the motor, only one of the other of the ribbons is transported.

    • A thermal printer which always performs a satisfactory printing operation regardless of whether a ribbon cassette mounted for printing houses an ink ribbon for hot release mode printing or an ink ribbon for cold release mode printing. Hot release mode printing is satisfactory for printing normal printing papers, while cold release mode printing is satisfactory for printing OHP (overhead projection) papers. The printer is capable of sensing the difference between ribbon cassette having an ink ribbon for hot release mode printing and a ribbon cassette having an ink ribbon for cold release mode printing, when mounted on the printer for printing. The printer upon sensing the type of ribbon cassette mounted, then adjusts its components, if necessary, so that they are configured in locations appropriate to perform satisfactory printing according to the type of ink ribbon housed in the ribbon cassette mounted. Alternatives include moving a carriage on which the ribbon cassette is mounted toward and away from a platen against which the paper to be printed is placed, moving the location of the ribbon cassette toward or away from the platen against which the paper to be printed is placed, and moving an arm which may guide the ink ribbon after it passes the thermal head.

    • A recording apparatus for recording onto a recording medium and capable of correcting an erroneous recording includes an ink sheet mounting section on which an ink sheet for effecting the recording medium is mountable, a device for effecting the ink sheet to the recording medium, and a motor for driving the ink sheet. By a driving force produced by one directional rotation of the motor, the recording ink sheet is moved between an effecting position where the recording ink sheet is effected by the effecting device and a retracted position where the recording ink sheet retracts from the effecting position. Also, by a driving force produced by the motor, the correcting ink sheet is moved between an effecting position wherein the correcting ink sheet is effected by the effecting device and a retracted position where the correcting ink sheet retracts from the effecting position. Further, a conveying device conveys the correcting ink sheet without conveying the recording ink sheet in response to movement of the correcting ink sheet between the effecting and retracting positions.
