    • The invention relates to a freewheeling device 11 in the case of which the outer freewheeling component 14 and the inner freewheeling component 17 are connected in the main torque transmitting direction by locking members 25 which engage apertures 24 of the inner freewheeling component 17 and recesses 26 of the outer freewheeling component 14 and which permit one of the freewheeling components 14 to be overtaken by the other freewheeling component 17 when a certain speed is exceeded. If the speed is below the specified speed, an additional switching element is released via a speed-dependent switching device 29, so that the switching element 30, under the influence of a spring 36, is transferred into a position where it supports the locking member 25 to prevent them from escaping radially inwardly, thereby cancelling the freewheeling function. Thus, at low speeds, torques may be transmitted in both directions of rotation via the freewheeling device 11, whereas the freewheeling function is ensured at higher speeds.

The control circuit further includes a two-wheel-drive circuit, a four-wheel-drive circuit, a transfer shift position detecting sensor, and an engine rotation drive detecting sensor. One of the two-wheel-drive circuit and the four-wheel-drive circuit in the transfer shift position detecting sensor moves to a closed condition independently of the shift position when the engine is stopped, and the transfer shift position detecting sensor correspondingly produces a signal of one of the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive conditions, respectively. The engine rotation drive detecting sensor detects a rotational condition of an engine and produces a signal which closes one of the two-wheel-drive and the four-wheel-drive circuits when the engine is stopped.

    • A differential assembly has a rotatable, open sides casing into which the opposite, splined ends of axial shafts extend. Each axial shaft has a splined collar ring mounted upon it and a surrounding coupling ring. A drive rod, secured to the casing, extends between the opposed coupling rings and has wedge shaped surfaces fitted within aligned V-shaped notches formed on facing surfaces of the coupling rings. Disk plate type clutches releasably connect each of the coupling rings to their adjacent collar rings. The clutches include Belleville spring washer plates which resiliently force the coupling rings inwardly against the drive rod for maintaining the rod wedge shaped surfaces in face to face contact with their adjacent notch walls. The coupling rings, clutches and collar rings are assembled into the casing through its open side and thereafter, the rod is inserted endwise into the casing, between the coupling rings, through a rod receiving hole in the casing. When the casing rotates, the drive rod wedge surfaces drive the coupling rings and also, press them outwardly for connecting the clutch for engaging the coupling rings with the collars to rotate the axles. If either axle rotates faster than the casing, the outward pressure of its rod wedge surface against its coupling ring notch is momentarily relieved and therefore, its clutch is temporarily disconnected so that axle may free wheel until it returns to the casing speed.

    • A vehicle drive system particularly suited for snow blowers includes a main sprocket rotatably carrying a first and second pawl. Each pawl drivably engages a respective sprocket. The first sprocket is fixably mounted to a first axle means such that rotation of the main sprocket causes the first pawl to drivably engage the first sprocket to rotate the first axle means. A second sprocket is fixably engaged to a second axle means such that rotation of said main sprocket causes a second pawl to drivably engage the second sprocket to cause rotation of the second axle means. Friction means supplies sufficient drag to the pawl such that rotation of main sprocket causes each of the pawls to assume an engaging orientation with their respective sprockets. Each of the pawls can be selectively disengaged from a drive orientation by manually advancing the respective axle means, i.e., when an operator maneuvers the vehicle for turning.
