    • The invention discloses an elongate spliced member, particularly a tooth rack for a rapier loom, and a method for making same. The spliced member includes two elongate member segments joined at respective ends and having at least one through aperture positioned laterally from a respective first side to a second side adjacent the joined ends. An elongate recess is formed on opposed surfaces of the member segments, and each recess surrounds a respective aperture and communicates with the respective joined end of the segments. A carbon fiber strand is wound alternately through the aperture in each of the segments to splice the segments together end-to-end. The spliced member has the functional characteristics equivalent to an integrally formed member of the same length.

    • A method is described for installing a stud to extend above a surface of a composite portion of a tank or other structure subject to the pressure of cryogenic fluid, so that another structure can be attached to the stud. The method includes drilling a through aperture at the location of the stud, and installing a threaded insert near the outer surface of the aperture, if not already installed. A metal bolt having a CTE less than that of the composite material is selected. The bolt has an unthreaded shank portion and a threaded portion. The length of the bolt exceeds the length of the projecting stud and the thickness of the composite. The bolt is assembled with a commercial k seal, a collar having a CTE much less than that of the bolt, and another k seal. The seals mate with corresponding frustoconical surfaces of the composite and of the collar, and when the bolt is properly torqued to a preload, prevent leakage. The assembly and torquing may be done at room temperature, and the CTE compensation aspects of the combination results in maintaining a preload over the entire range of temperatures. The preload not only aids in maintaining a seal, but acts to prevent delamination of the composite (210).

    • An improved joint socket structure used in artificial Christmas trees has enhanced safety, avoiding electrical wires from being squeezed and damaged by rotary branches. The main improvement is an arcuate shield disposed on each pivotal joint socket that connects the branches to the main trunk. The shield covers the space above the joint socket so that electrical wires wound around the Christmas trees will not get into the movement space of rotary branches. By way of this, the joint socket structure according to the invention can prevent electrical current leakage and electrical shocks caused by broken electrical wires.
