    • In one embodiment of the present invention, a shape memory alloy (“SMA”)-actuated helical spring brake comprises a rotatable member and a helical wrap spring arranged concentrically about the rotatable member. The spring has a first spring end and a second spring end and includes a number of turns that are based radially inward and are configured to frictionally engage the rotatable member. The turns permit rotation of the rotatable member in a first direction and inhabit rotation in a second direction. The SMA-actuate helical spring brake also include an anchor point coupled to the second spring end, and an SMA actuator having an output drive member coupled to the first spring end. The SMA actuator is configured to, for example, deflect the first spring end to permit the rotatable member to rotate.

    • In a fly reel, drag is provided by use a helically wound wire spring mounted coaxially over a fixed post attached to the reel frame. The turns at one end of the helically wound spring loosely contact the fixed post, while at the other end of the spring the turns are in intimate contact with the post. One end of the spring is free and the other end is fixed to a spool axially straddling the spring-post combination. The spool contains a drag adjustment knob whose initial setting determines the angular travel of the spool until a pin on the knob contacts the free end of the spring. As line is stripped from the spool, the spool rotates and the loose turns incrementally tighten about the fixed post. This generates a torque on the spool causing drag on the line, the torque linearly increasing with spool rotation until the spool advances to where the pin on the adjustment knob engages the free end of the spring wire, forcing the spring turns to relax about the post so as to maintain the torque value that existed when the pin first contacted the wire's free end. In the direction of opposite rotation of the spool, the spool applies a force to the spring decoupling the spring coils from the post, and no drag torque is generated to oppose the turning of the crank for this direction of reel rotation. The drag adjustment is infinitely variable, and the drag is silently generated.

    • A lateral pull roll-up blind includes a drive housing member which is provided with lateral connecting elements which are situated within the outline of the driving wheel. These connecting elements, as well as compatible connecting elements of a carrier are distributed along a distribution circle in a distributing pattern rendering multiple angular repositioning of the housing member relative to the carrier possible. Even the other end of the lateral pull roll-up blind and the corresponding carrier are constructed in the same manner. The housing member is provided with a hollow pin on which there is mounted a clamping winding spring, while an entraining disc serving for the rotational entrainment of the associated end of the take-up shaft is rotatably mounted in the pin of the housing member. The entraining disc is drivingly connected with the driving wheel through actuating portions of the clamping winding spring.

    • A spring coupler including a drive member, a driven member, a pair of coil springs interconnecting the drive and driven members, and a cylindrical housing providing a unidirectional drive either clockwise or counter-clockwise. The drive member has a pair of recesses in its outer surface and the driven member has a pair of substantially complementary projections, the projections and recesses interacting upon the assembly of the members to form a substantially cylindrical surface. The coil springs are coiled serially about the assembled members and the outer surfaces of the springs are frictionally engaged with the inner surface of the housing in the relaxed condition of the springs. Tangs on one end of each of the springs are inserted into individual ones of clearances between the projections and an edge of the recesses and the tangs on the other ends of the springs are inserted into slots in the projections. When the drive member is turned clockwise or counter-clockwise an edge of one of the recesses engages one of the tangs to tighten its spring and break the frictional engagement with the housing. The interaction of the other tang of the tightened spring with the slot in the projection in the other recess causes the inserted tang of the other spring to tighten its spring so as to release the frictional engagement of both springs to allow rotation of the drive and driven members. On the other hand, any counterrotations of the driven member leaves one spring in frictional engagement with the housing.

    • A vehicle braking system including a wheel hub, a hub member separate from the wheel hub, a torsional coupling device and a magnetically actuable brake spring. In a preferred embodiment, the hub member is connected to the vehicle suspension by the torsional coupling device and, upon actuating, the brake spring wraps around the wheel hub to cause the hub member and the wheel hub to be nonrotatably joined together. In another embodiment, the wheel hub is torsionally connected to the hub member and actuation of the brake spring causes the hub member to be nonrotatably joined to the vehicle suspension. The movements of the wheel hub relative to the vehicle suspension permitted by the torsional coupling are monitored by an electronic control circuit that guards against wheel lockup or skid conditions. The electronic control circuit intermittently triggers the brake spring between brake release and approaching wheel lockup so as to incorporate anti-skid performance with the brake function. The braking system is disclosed for use with both a free-wheeling or nondriven wheel and a driven wheel.
