    • The invention relates to a brake actuator for an aircraft hydraulic brake, which is intended to be added into one of the cavities of a brake ring, the actuator comprising: a liner (1) designed to be housed sealingly in the cavity of the ring; a piston (3) mounted to slide sealingly in the liner along an axis of sliding so as to apply a braking force when a fluid is introduced under pressure into the cavity; a wear compensation device (10) which defines a position to which the piston retreats into the liner by means of a mobile stop (11; 111) that can be moved forward by the piston as a braking force is applied; an elastic return member (18) returning the piston towards the retracted position bearing against the mobile stop; according to the invention, the mobile stop is associated with a notched indexing member (13) allowing the mobile stop to move under the thrust of the piston, but preventing any return motion of the mobile stop with respect to the liner.

    • The invention is directed to a brake actuator of a vehicle which provides for a hydraulic reset in such a manner that a defined distance is always present between the brake lining 26 and the brake disc in the rest position of the friction brake. The brake actuator includes an electric motor 2, a hydraulic transmission 16 having a hydraulic chamber 22 with a first hydraulic piston 14 and a second hydraulic piston 18 and a second hydraulic cylinder 20. The brake actuator also includes a spindle unit (8, 10) located between an electric motor 2 and the hydraulic transmission 16. A further hydraulic chamber in the form of a readjusting chamber 28 is also provided. This additional chamber is closed off with a compensating piston movable relative to the ambient. The additional chamber 28 is connected to the first hydraulic chamber 22 via an opening 44 located in the second hydraulic piston 18. The opening 44 is provided with a check valve to permit flow to the pressure chamber 22. In the event of an exchange of the brake lining, the first hydraulic piston 14 is driven back so far that it clears an opening 40 of a reset channel 36 located between the pressure chamber 22 and the readjusting chamber 28. A further check valve 38 secures the reset channel 36 with respect to the readjusting chamber 28.

    • A clutch or brake unit is described with an automatic wear adjustment mechanism.Clutches and brakes operate by the engagement of friction members (4,6) which experience wear in use requiring a larger stroke of the unit to effect engagement. This results in delayed clutch or brake operation which can be a serious disadvantage where prompt action is required. Conventionally this wear has been compensated by replacement of the worn friction members or by manual adjustment of them resulting in temporary disablement of the unit and requiring service personnel time.In the inventive unit, friction members (4,6) are mounted between pressure members (10,2) and an actuator (12) operates against a backing member (15) to effect clutch or brake actuation and de-activation by movement of the friction members towards and away from each other, and the position of at least one of the pressure members is adjusted automatically in response to wear of the friction members. Sprags, ratchet mechanisms, screw threads and tension springs are alternatively described for adjusting this position and the wear can be sensed by a proximity switch or microswitch. Pneumatic and hydraulic mechanisms are also described.

    • A truck mounted air cylinder and slack adjuster incorporates an elongated brake operating member adapted to apply a brake applying thrust to the brake beams. An air cylinder is mounted to the truck and a threaded rod is attached to the brake operating member and extends into the air cylinder. A drive member is positioned within the air cylinder and is in sealing relationship with the cylinder walls. The drive member is movable within the cylinder in response to a brake application air pressure applied thereto. A clutch connecting the threaded rod to the drive member for concurrent axial movement with the clutch provides for rotation of the rod relative to the drive member. A slack adjuster is associated with the cylinder and the rod. The slack adjuster cooperates with the clutch to extend the rod relative to the elongated brake operating member in response to a slack condition sensed by the slack adjuster during a brake application.

    • A hydro-pneumatic actuator for providing a two-stage buildup of the hydraulic output pressure. A primary hydraulic piston, to which a pneumatic input piston actuator is connected, acts in a larger bore of a hydraulic cylinder to transfer fluid via a central passage in a spring-loaded, differential area, secondary hydraulic piston, that is coaxially disposed in the hydraulic cylinder in spaced-apart relationship with, and downstream of, the primary piston. A larger face of the secondary piston is in the larger bore and the smaller face is in a reduced diameter bore of the hydraulic cylinder, so that a pressure buildup in the hydraulic cylinder effects actuation of the secondary piston to close a check valve and thereby inter-fluid communication between the larger and smaller bores of the hydraulic cylinder via the central passage. The smaller face of the secondary piston is therefore effective to transmit the hydraulic force with a high gain multiplication factor following attainment of an initial predetermined force in low gain.The arrangement includes a displacement cylinder to measure the pneumatic piston stroke and an expansion chamber into which fluid is drawn from the reservoir when piston stroke is excessive for subsequent transfer to the hydraulic cylinder.

During a brake release, the one-way check valve closes a passage through the slack adjuster piston to cause the piston to shift from its one extreme position to the other extreme position with the fluid flow, as the hydro-pneumatic actuator is moved from its application position to its release position. This in turn draws hydraulic fluid from the power piston chamber into a clearance volume created by shifting of the slack adjuster piston, and accordingly forces the power piston to retract a predetermined distance corresponding to the capacity of the clearance volume and the effective area of the power piston, thereby maintaining a constant brake shoe clearance during brake release.

    • A fluid pressure actuated piston of an aircraft multiple disc brake assembly is adapted to have an extended stroke by telescoping with a pressure actuated cylinder. The piston is slidably carried in a fluid pressure actuated cylinder which, in turn, is slidably carried in a fixed carrier. Initially, only the piston moves axially to extend its stroke with respect to the carrier. The cylinder's structure and axial position with respect to the carrier creates a fluid pressure responsive surface area initially sealed from the effects of the fluid pressure. Axial movement of the cylinder is initially resisted by either mechanical or differential pressure member until the stroke of the piston reaches a predetermined axial position to engage the cylinder. Continued extension of the piston's stroke urges the cylinder axially to break the fluid seal and expose the heretofore unaffected surface area of the cylinder to fluid pressure thereby extending the stroke of the cylinder a predetermined axial distance. The piston's maximum allowable stroke is thereby increased the same distance the cylinder travels. The output force of the piston is essentially unaffected by the force imposed on the cylinder necessary to overcome the fluid seal and once extended, the cylinder does not provide any work force area.
