    • In an illustrated embodiment, ultrasonic image processing equipment of the B scan type selectively supplies successive lines of an ultrasonic image signal to a signal mixer which also may receive a gray scale signal. Each successive ultrasonic field interval may thus have inserted therein a gray scale signal so that the ultrasonic display oscilloscope shows a flicker-free gray scale at one margin of the ultrasonic image display area, extending parallel to the line sweep direction (depth direction). By subjecting the gray scale signal to the video standards conversion and to the other transmission processes, e.g. photoelectric and photochemical conversion processes, used in video display and documentation, it is possible to prevent the loss of medically relevant information in these processes. The gray scale signal line or lines may alternate with the ultrasonic lines in each field interval so as to be recorded on magnetic tape, motion picture film and other media along with each ultrasonic image field.

    • In a device for graphically representing characters encoded in a digital nal, a writing element adapted to sweep across a recording medium at selected intervals is enabled by a timing means to selectively mark the recording medium during a selected series of sweeps, and a decoding means receives the digital signal and provides segment select signals, which specify a combination of segments from a group of segments which may graphically represent each of the characters in the digital signal. The outputs of the timing means and the decoding means are coupled to a network of logic elements to generate a signal which is coupled to the writing element, whereby the writing element selectively marks the recording medium during the series of sweeps to form the segments representing each of the characters.

    • An echo-sounding method and apparatus for measuring short distances, particularly shallow depths, with the aid of a periodically moving indicator member whose indicating action is triggered in dependence upon the time elapsing from the emission moment of the pulse to the reception moment of the echo. For improving the resolution of indication at short distances, the time is expanded by continuously interposing between the echo reception moment and the triggering moment, a delay which increases in proportion to the length of the pulse travel time. For this purpose a triangular wave voltage is generated, the ascending portion of the wave commencing to ascend at the moment of pulse emission and to decline at the moment of echo reception. Concurrently with the triangular wave voltage there is provided an auxiliary voltage, for example of rectangular or trapezoidal wave shape, which has a steep lagging flank coincident with the end of the triangular wave. A trigger pulse derived from the steep lagging flank controls the action of the moving indicator member. Preferably the triangular wave voltage is obtained by supplying a constant current charge to a capacitor commencing with the moment of pulse emission, and changing from charging to constant current discharging of the capacitor under control by the arrival of the echo.
