    • Machine-readable symbol reader systems including one or more shields are provided. One example machine-readable symbol reader system includes a conveyor system to convey objects bearing one or more machine-readable symbols past a first region that is transmissive to light. The system includes a machine-readable symbol reader having a housing, a window formed in the housing, and at least one optical sensor received in the housing and having a field of view that extends outward of the window, at least the window of the machine-readable symbol reader positioned relatively below the conveyor system with the field of view aligned with the first region of the conveyor system. The system can further include a shield having a frame with a plurality of apertures that are transmissive to light, the shield positioned relatively below the first region and positioned relatively above the window of the machine-readable symbol reader.

    • An automated checkout system and method of operation for reading encoded data, such as barcode labels, on a bottom surface of an item using a data reader. The automated checkout system includes a leading and a trailing conveyor separated by a gap, where the leading conveyor may be vertically offset in relation to the trailing conveyor such that the item tilts or drops slightly as it moves between the conveyors. A data reader is positioned beneath the conveyors to read the encoded data through the gap as the item transitions from the leading conveyor onto the trailing conveyor. The automated checkout system may include a transition element, such as a transfer plate or guide rollers, to bridge the gap between the conveyors to provide a smooth transfer between the conveyors, prevent items from becoming lodged between the conveyors, and prevent debris from falling through and collecting on the data reader.

    • A loading mechanism of a storage device includes a loader tray into which cartridge is loaded. A stopper spring is arranged on an opening of the loader tray. One side of the stopper spring is attached onto the loader tray, and the stopper spring is bent so as to include an engagement portion in a “V-like” shape. A pair of extending portions, extending toward the stopper spring, are formed on a side of a release plate. If the release plate is moved toward the stopper spring, the pair of extending portions move underneath an inclined portion of the stopper spring, so as to push up the engagement portion.

    • An information recording/reproducing apparatus is provided with a shutter mechanism for closing and opening an insertion slot formed on a wall of a housing to insert/eject an information recording medium into/from the housing. The shutter mechanism includes a first member which is movable in a first direction perpendicular to a second direction in which the information recording medium is inserted into the slot of the housing, the first member being movable between a slot open and a slot closed position. A second member is fixed on the housing and is selectively either contacting the first member in the slot closed position or being spaced away from the first member in the slot open position. A slanted surface, which is slanted or inclined with respect to the first and the second directions, is formed on the first member such that the first and second members contact each other on the slanted surface when the first member is in the slot closed position. A seal member, made of elastic material, is preferably fixed to the slanted surface for sealing the slot when the slot is closed. The slanted surface has a recess which has an abutment surface almost vertical to the second direction, so as to effectively block entry of an information recording medium when the slot is closed.
