    • A sheet counter has an elongate element (18) in which is formed a suction port (19), connected to a vacuum source by a duct (26). A pressure sensor is arranged to sense the pressure in the duct, in the vicinity of the port (19), and produces an electrical signal indicative thereof. The counter is set up by sensing the pressure in the duct with the port (19) open, either with the vacuum source operating or before operation thereof, and then by sensing the pressure in the duct with the port closed and the vacuum source operating. A pressure count-value part-way between the two sensed pressures is computed and during subsequent operation of the counter, a valid count signal is generated only if the instantaneous sensed pressure in the duct falls below the computed count-value.

    • A mechanical cycle counter incorporates a cast aluminum, thermal isolating upwardly open connector coupled to a steam powered cyclic actuator depending stainless steel cylinder closed off at opposite ends by stainless steel end caps. A disk-like piston slides interiorly of the cylinder and is extended by a piston rod upwardly through the cylinder and through a hole within the bottom of the connector. A mechanical counter oscillation arm rotates approximately sixty degrees and is mounted to a shaft bearing a plurality of rotary wheels. A horizontal portion of the oscillation arm is in the path of the projecting end of the piston rod. A chamber beneath the piston and above the lower end cap receives steam. A stainless steel coil spring concentrically surrounds the piston rod and has one end abutting the piston and the opposite end abutting the upper end cap. A rise in steam pressure causes the piston to compress the coil spring driving the projecting end of the piston rod momentarily against the horizontal portion of the oscillation arm to cyclically increment the mechanical counter. Various stainless steel parts thermally isolate the actuator from the counter.

    • A method and apparatus for counting articles are disclosed which utilize a cylindrical drum radially divided into several individual sections or counters. Each individual counter includes at least one vacuum manifold extending axially along the outer surface of the drum. Each manifold is provided with at least one nozzle which extends to the inner surface of the drum and which is operable to pick up articles when its associated manifold is vacuum actuated. As one of the counters rotates through a zone in which the articles to be counted lie, some of its manifolds are actuated with a vacuum so that their associated nozzles pick up a preselected number of articles. Continued rotation of the drum rotates the counter to a zone wherein each of the actuated manifolds is supplied with air pressure to release the predetermined number of articles so that they fall on a conveyor belt which carries them to a receptacle. By actuating different combinations of manifolds of each counter, each counter is able to transfer any one of several predetermined numbers of articles.
