    • A method of manufacturing a soil or wear test feature on a document of value is provided. The method comprises designating an area of the document of value for soil or wear testing and measuring an optical characteristic which is affected by the presence of soil or wear of the designated area on the document of value, or of the same area on an identical document of value. The measured optical characteristic is encoded to generate corresponding optical characteristic data and the encoded optical characteristic data is associated with the document of value by means of a machine readable element provided on the document of value. Also provided is a method of detecting soiling or wear of a document of value, comprising measuring an optical characteristic which is affected by the presence of soil or wear of a designated area on the document of value; reading data from a machine readable element provided on the document of value to retrieve encoded optical characteristic data generated from previous measurement of the optical characteristic of the designated area, or of the same area on an identical document of value; and comparing the measured optical characteristic with the encoded optical characteristic to identify any difference therebetween, a difference being indicative of soiling or wear of the document of value.

    • A probabilistic neural network (PNN) comprises a layer L1 of input nodes, a layer L2 of exemplar nodes, a layer L3 of primary Parzen nodes, a layer L4 of sum nodes, and optionally a layer L5 of output nodes. Each exemplar node determines the degree of match between a respective exemplar vector and an input vector and feeds a respective primary Parzen node. The exemplar and primary Parzen nodes are grouped into design classes, with a sum node for each class which combines the outputs of the primary Parzen nodes for that class and feeds a corresponding output node. The network includes for each primary Parzen node (e.g. L3-2-3P) for the design classes a secondary Parzen node (L3-2-3S), the secondary Parzen nodes all feeding a null class sum node (L4-0). Each secondary Parzen node has a Parzen function with a lower peak amplitude and a broader spread than the corresponding primary Parzen node, and is fed from the exemplar node for that primary Parzen node. The secondary Parzen nodes in effect detect input vectors which are "sufficiently different" from the design classes--that is, null class vectors. The network is applicable to banknote recognition and authentication, the null class corresponding to counterfeit banknotes.

    • Apparatus is disclosed for scanning a banknote (33). A lengthwise strip of the banknote (33) is illuminated with white light, and the banknote is moved parallel to its width. Light reflected from all regions of the lengthwise strip is conveyed through an optical fibre fishtail array to a single photodetector, or to a spectroscope and then to several photodetectors for color scanning. The waveform produced by the or each photodetector is then characteristic of the surface of the banknote, and is used in an analyzing circuit for banknote pattern recognition, or to sense the condition of the banknote with regard to its age or degree of soiling. The analyzing circuit includes means for compressing or expanding the length of the waveform to give it a standard length for subsequent comparison with one or more stored characteristic waveforms in a memory (16). The apparatus also determines the mean level of intensity of the waveform in an integrator (9), and includes a circuit (24 to 28) for obtaining the standard deviation of selected points of the waveform from the mean value, a low standard deviation indicating a badly soiled or worn banknote.
