    • A system for the collection of near real time confirmation samples is provided to quickly eliminate false positive alarms by confirming the presence or absence of a chemical agent when a monitor operating in near real time to detect the presence of that chemical agent generates an alarm. The confirmation sampling system is synchronized with the near real time monitor and the confirmation sampler and monitor draw common samples of the atmosphere of concern. In the event that the monitor generates an alarm, the confirmation sampler preserves the sample taken contemporaneously with the alarm event for separate analysis, and also takes and preserves one or more follow-on samples.

    • A low profile, low volume smoke chamber displaces a light source, such as a light emitting diode or laser diode, and a sensor, such as photodiode or phototransistor, to the exterior of the sensing volume. A symmetrical sensing volume results which can be coupled to symmetrical input/output ports via a generally U-shaped flow path. A two part sensing chamber housing is formed with a lower cylindrical base portion and an upper cylindrical cover portion which slideably engage one another. At least the upper cylindrical portion carries a plurality of grooves for suppression of reflections and collection of dust. An exterior end of the upper portion carries a plurality of spaced apart openings which can be filled with a screen. A reduced sensing volume in combination with a selected screen size produces an acceptable signal to noise ratio and response rate while still excluding insects and other non-smoke related particulate matter.

    • A self contained, wearable personal protection device that incorporates a silent security alarm feature, a smoke detector alarm feature and, optionally, the feature of providing the time of day to the wearer is disclosed. The silent security alarm feature is activated when the wearer pushes a button on the device. Further, the wrist worn personal protection device optionally provides the wearer with the time of day as a further incentive for the child to wear the device.

    • A smoke detector (2) which operates on the scattered light principle comprises a detector chamber (4) through which a light beam (10) passes. A series of collimator discs (24, 26, 28) with apertures of progressively increasing size are associated with the light source (6) to prevent glints of light from entering the zone of the chamber at which detection occurs as a result of the presence of scattered light induced by the presence of smoke particles. A light absorber (12) at the end of the detector chamber remote from the light source uses a target surface in the form of an asymmetric cone (42) onto which the beam is directed. The design of the collimator discs and light absorber reduce the occurrence of stray light, leading to increased sensitivity.
