    • An apparatus for and a method of addressing data storage locations (80) employs an electron beam (76) to address such storage locations and thereby store data in and read data out of them. The storage locations are defined by the overlapping areas of multiple column electrodes (62) extending in a common direction on a first substrate (82) and rows (120) addressed by an electron beam (76) and extending in a common direction on a second substrate (54). A layer of dielectric material (52) separates the first and the second substrates, which are positioned face-to-face and spaced-apart with the direction of the addressed rows transverse to that of the column electrodes. The column electrodes receive data drive signals. The addressing apparatus is configured so that for each storage location secondary electrons emitted by the electron beam striking the location function as an electrical switch that changes between a conducting state and a nonconducting state in response to the presence of the electron beam. The secondary electrons function to either store data in or read data out of the storage location. If the storage location includes a layer (52) of material having electro-optic properties and receives incident image-carrying light, the secondary electrons function to select and store image data across the layer and thereby provide a display system having gray scale luminance.

    • Disclosed herein is a large picture display device including a plurality of display units mounted to a support frame. The large picture display device comprises a push latch stopper mounted to the display unit, a push latch mounted to the support frame and adapted to mate with the push latch stopper, and a spring means provided on the support frame. With this arrangement, when the display unit is inserted into the support frame, the push latch stopper is engaged with the push latch to be locked, thereby permitting the display unit to be retained by the support frame. When the push latch is unlocked, the display unit is drawn because the spring means forwardly biases the display unit.

    • A multilayered liquid crystal display device includes a front substrate, a rear substrate and at least one intermediate substrate interposed therebetween, respective spaces being formed between the intermediate substrate and the front substrate, and between the intermediate substrate and the rear substrate. Liquid crystal layers are in the spaces between the substrates so that the display surfaces provide an overall display. Intersecting signal and scanning electrodes are arranged on opposed mutually facing surfaces of the intermediate and rear substrate and of the intermediate and front substrate. Color layers are arranged in an optical path corresponding to the intersecting portions of the signal and scanning electrodes, but on the opposite side of the intermediate substrate on which the associated intersecting signal and scanning lines are located. The color layers are not interposed between their associated intersecting signal and scanning electrodes. The display is arranged in adjacent sections, each adjacent section being on opposite sides of the intermediate substrate, thereby producing a uniform display surface.

    • A two-layer twisted nematic type liquid crystal display device for providing improved contrast is provided. The interior surfaces of the transparent electrode plates of the cells have been treated so that the long axes of the liuqid crystal molecules adjacent the plates are aligned with the treated direction of the plates. The plates are disposed with the treated directions of opposed surfaces at 90.degree. angles to each other with the treated direction on the intermediate electrode surfaces of each cell being coincidental. Characters of the transparent electrodes are formed on the interior surfaces for forming displays having a reference direction from the upper or 12 o'clock position to the lower or 6 o'clock position. An upper and lower polarization plate having axes of polarization substantially parallel to each other are disposed on the outer surfaces of the device. Improved contrast is obtained in both the upper and lower displays when the device is viewed between the four-thirty and seven-thirty directions.

    • A liquid crystal display screen having a liquid crystal layer disposed between a pair of carrier plates to form a liquid crystal cell characterized in a plurality of electrode layers disposed between the carrier plates with adjacent electrode layers being separated by an insulating layer and selected electrode layers being in the shape of characters or digits and being energized to form displays of different characters or digits. In one embodiment, a digit electrode layer is applied on opposite faces of the liquid crystal layer and a continuous electrode is separated by an insulating layer from each of the additional electrode layers. In a second embodiment, the liquid crystal layer is disposed between a continuous electrode layer and more than two digit electrode layers with the outermost digit electrode layer being continuous whereas the inner digit electrodes have interrupted conducting surfaces. In the third embodiment, a color filter such as a three-color triplet having the colors arranged in strips is disposed between the carrier plates, the continuous electrode is formed by three electrode layers separated by insulating layers with each layer having strips of electrodes overlying the strips of a specific color so by selecting the energizing of various electrodes, a character of one color can be produced.
