    • An addressable valve system is described wherein a plurality of valves are embedded into a single, compact valve block. Each valve comprises a piston moving in a bore in the block. A magnet embedded in the piston is positioned within a coil. When energized, the coil attracts the magnet and the plunger upwards away from a valve seat. Magnetic shields disposed between the pistons provide magnetic isolation between the pistons and simultaneously apply a closing force to the pistons by drawing the magnets downward towards the valve seat. When energized, the coild overwhelm the closing force and open the valves. Electronics for the valve block and the coils are provided on a circuit board overlying the pistons and bores. The electronics provide addressability of the valves and automatically generate “pick” and “hold” timing whereby the initial motivating force (voltage) applied to the current is higher to get the valves moving quickly when valve is first commanded to open. After a brief period of time, the coil voltage is lowered to a level that provided a lower maintaining force to keep the valve open.

    • An automatic performing apparatus that executes recording and reproduction of a performance includes a diagnostic signal generator for sending a power supply control circuit at least one of normal and abnormal diagnostic signals indicating whether a controller is normally executing a program. The power supply control circuit controls the power supplied to a drive circuit by interrupting the power or reducing the power to such a low level that the drive circuit is not damaged by a prolonged power supply if the operation of the controller is determined abnormal based on the diagnostic signal generated by the diagnostic signal generator.

    • A musical display combination comprises a postage stamp display mounted on a music box that reproduces an audible rendition of a music composition having a theme that substantively and correspondingly relates to a particular subject matter theme depicted by the visual image of the postage stamp. The postage stamp display includes a postage stamp disposed on a rigid planar thin sheet substrate. An envelope defined by two pliable sheets having an outer edge is secured on the rigid planar thin sheet substrate. A postage stamp is disposed between the sheets within the envelope allowing a visual examination of the postage stamp therethrough. A clear material forms a transparent overlay structure over the postage stamp through which the postage stamp may be viewed.

    • A scanner for an electronic musical instrument employs a matrix having two sets of current conducting lines forming intersecting rows and columns, with a plurality of magnetic cores arranged at the intersections of the matrix. Individual ones of both sets of lines are energized successively to individually scan the cores, and the lines of one set are connected to a gate which produces a train of output pulses on a single output line, in response to cores which are operative to magnetically couple the lines of one set to the lines of the other set. The cores are normally maintained in inoperative condition by exposing them to a saturating magnetic field. The cores are each selectively rendered operative by moving the magnetic field, relative to the core enabling the core to effect a magnetic coupling between intersecting lines of the two sets by operation of a key of the keyboard of the instrument, or by operation of an actuating member of a switch for selecting a control function for the instrument.
