    • A control rod and fuel supporting member gripping apparatus for gripping a fuel supporting member and a control rod is disposed in a reactor pressure vessel. The fuel supporting member is mounted on a core supporting plate and has fuel assembly supporting holes in which the bottom portions of fuel assemblies are inserted. The control rod is detachably connected with a control rod driving mechanism through a bayonet coupling and is passed through a control rod passage so as to be lifted up and down in order to remove the fuel supporting member and the control rod from the core supporting plate and the control rod driving mechanism. The control rod and fuel supporting member gripping apparatus comprises a gripping apparatus body hoisted vertically liftably in an installed state within the reactor pressure vessel, a fuel supporting member gripping device disposed at a portion below the gripping apparatus body, a control rod gripping device device disposed at a portion below the gripping apparatus body to be liftable up and down and rotatable with respect to the gripping apparatus body, and a rotating mechanism for rotating the control rod gripping device.In withdrawing the control rod and fuel supporting member from the reactor pressure vessel, the fuel supporting member is raised to a height above the control rod and is prevented from rotating, the control rod is thereafter rotated, and the fuel supporting member and the control rod are withdrawn from the reactor pressure vessel substantially at the same time.

    • A grapple is provided for use with a fuel bundle channel of a nuclear reactor wherein the channel is provided with a pair of gussets in opposite corners of an upper end of the channel, each gusset having a hole therein. The grapple includes a pair of lever arms, each provided with a lifting foot at a lower end of the respective lever arm. The lever arms are movable in opposite directions to a channel lifting position wherein the channel gripper of each lever arm is located under a respective one of the pair of channel gussets. The channel lifting foot of each lever arm includes a pair of laterally spaced lifting elements such that the lifting feet may engage the underside of the gusset on either side of the gusset hole. In addition, each channel lifting foot includes a secondary foot or slider captured between the pair of lifting elements. The slider includes a hole which can be aligned with the bolt hole in the gusset, permitting a ball lock pin to be inserted into the holes to thereby securely attach the lifting feet to the channel gussets.

    • A latch tool features two elongate arms which extend down along either side of a control rod. Rotatable actuating rods are mounted on the arms. The upper ends of the actuating rods are provided with cranks which engage in slots formed in an actuating disc. As the disc is rotated, the cranks rotate the actuating rods and swing cam-like members, which are fixed to the rods, into position under an unlatching handle. In the preferred embodiments, the actuating disc is threaded onto the exterior of a rotatable input member, so that after the cam-like members are swung into position, the actuating disc threads its way up the input member in a manner which pulls the cam-like members upwardly and pulls the unlatching handle. In addition to the cam-like members which actuate the unlatching handle, lifting cam-like members may additionally be provided to fit in under a lifting handle of the control rod, and facilitate lifting of the control rod out of its position.

    • Apparatus for releasably engaging an elongated member that is releasably connected to the top nozzle of a nuclear reactor fuel assembly. The top nozzle has an adapter plate disposed at its lower end having at least one passageway therethrough through which the elongated member is disposed. The elongated member has a releasable latching structure at one end that is able to be engaged by the apparatus, having at least one latching member movable between a latched position in which the latching member is able to engage said adapter plate and secure the absorber rod in a stationary relationship with respect to the adapter plate and an unlatched position in which the latching member is able to disengage from said adapter plate so that the elongated member be removed from the fuel assembly. The apparatus comprises a hollow releasing member for moving the latching member of the latching structure between its latched position and its unlatched position, an engaging member connected to the releasing member and extending downwardly through the hollow portion of the releasing member, and an actuating member extending downwardly through the hollow portion of the releasing member and coacting with the engaging member to releasably engage the latching structure.

    • Device and method for retaining a linearly movable element in a nuclear reactor. The device comprises, for each shaft, a base fixed to the top part of the reactor internals and coaxial with a shaft guide tube; several grippers or catches spaced apart about the axis of the base and mounted for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis towards a position into and out of engagement with a portion, having circumferential grooves, of the shaft contained in the tube; a slide movable axially on the base towards a top position where it causes engagement of the catches in a groove of the rod, and out of such position; and springs bearing on the base and tending to engage the catches on the shaft. The slide is dimensioned so as to be held by the corresponding sleeve projecting through the reactor vessel cover in a position sufficiently distant from the low position for the catches to be released, whatever the temperature in the reactor.

    • Apparatus for transferring, not only the fuel assemblies, but other component assemblies including control-rod assemblies, thimble-plug assemblies, poison assemblies and the like during refueling of a nuclear reactor. The apparatus includes an outer mast for guiding and protecting the component assemblies which are transferred, an inner mast movable vertically within the guiding mast. The inner mast has grippers for engaging and lifting or lowering fuel assemblies. The outer mast has internal grooved rollers along its length. The inner mast is formed at oppositely facing channels held in a rigid assembly by plates to which the channels are secured. Opposite corners formed by the flanges and the webs of the channels penetrate into the grooves of the rollers and the inner mast is guided and held in position by the rollers. The apparatus also includes an elongated tube within the inner mast movable vertically relative to the inner mast. The tube has a grapple or gripper for engaging and lifting or lowering the component assemblies other than the fuel assemblies. The tube is penetrated by an actuator rod which locks the grapple to the component assemblies. The tube is driven upwardly or downwardly by a winch. The tube carries a primary set of lugs. The inner mast has a plate with an opening through which the lugs pass when the tube alone is driven upwardly. The plate carries a pivotal yoke which is movable between a first or closed position in which the yoke extends over the opening and a second or open position when it does not extend over the opening. In the closed position the yoke is engageable by the primary lugs so that when the tube is raised the inner mast is also raised. The tube also has secondary lugs. The inner mast carries a stop engageable by the secondary lugs when the tube is in a vertical position in which it has raised a component assembly within the masts. The engagement of the secondary lugs and plate serves to pull the inner mast into the guiding mast.
