    • Service equipment 10 for use in hostile environments includes a detachable service unit 20 secured to a stationary service unit 50 as shown in FIG. 1. The detachable service unit includes a housing 28 with an exterior plate 22, a power control interface 16 for connection to an exterior power source 48, locating pins 30a-30d located in said exterior plate, an electrical connector 40 in the exterior plate electrically coupled to said power control interface, and a pair of clamping receptacles 24 and 25 formed in the exterior plate and located on adjacent opposite edges of the exterior plate as shown in FIGS. 4A and 4B. The stationary unit includes an electrical connector 46 for connection to the electrical connector of the detachable service unit, a clamping apparatus 60 for clamping and unclamping the detachable service unit from the stationary unit, a base clamp assembly 120 shown in FIG. 5A for mounting the clamping apparatus onto the stationary unit, and locating pin holes 51 shown in FIG. 2 for receiving the locating pins and aligning the detachable service unit onto the stationary unit. The detachable service unit and stationary unit have mating scalloped faces shown in FIG. 4B which aid in alignment and provide a mechanism for heat dissipation.

    • For taking liquid samples, such as active solutions in an irradiated nuclear fuel processing plant within a confined area (10) located below a protective slab (12), use is made of vacuum pots (44), which are pneumatically transferred into a vessel (14) located beneath the slab and which are engaged on needles (40) supplied with fluid to be sampled and projecting into the bottom of the vessel. A pot (44) is moved pneumatically into a nacelle, pod or basket (76) of a rotary drum (72) by means of a transfer duct (60), which passes through a slab element (62) installed in a rotary plug (20). The positioning of the pot vertically with respect to a needle (40) is ensured by the combined rotations of the drum (72) and the plug (20). A vertical displacement of the slab element (62) ensures the sampling before the filled pot is pneumatically evacuated by the reverse path.

    • The inventive apparatus for remotely handling bar-like components which define a longitudinal direction includes a gripper mechanism for gripping the component including first and second gripper members longitudinally fixedly spaced from each other and oriented parallel to each other in planes transverse to the longitudinal direction. Each gripper member includes a jaw having at least one V-groove with opposing surfaces intersecting at a base and extending radially relative to the longitudinal direction for receiving the component in an open end between the opposing surfaces. The V-grooves on the jaw plate of the first and second gripper members are aligned in the longitudinal direction to support the component in the first and second gripper members. A jaw is rotatably mounted on and a part of each of the first and second gripper members for selectively assuming a retracted mode in which the open end of the V-groove is unobstructed and active mode in which the jaw spans the open end of the V-groove in the first and second gripper members. The jaw has a locking surface for contacting the component in the active mode to secure the component between the locking surface of the jaw and the opposing surfaces of the V-groove. The locking surface has a plurality of stepped portions, each defining a progressively decreasing radial distance between the base of the V-groove and the stepped portion opposing the base to accommodate varying sizes of components.
