摘要： Disclosed are synthetic garnets and related devices that can be used in radio-frequency (RF) applications. In some embodiments, such RF devices can include garnets having reduced or substantially nil Yttrium or other rare earth metals. Such garnets can be configured to yield high dielectric constants, and ferrite devices, such as TM-mode circulators/isolators, formed from such garnets can benefit from reduced dimensions. Further, reduced or nil rare earth content of such garnets can allow cost-effective fabrication of ferrite-based RF devices. In some embodiments, such ferrite devices can include other desirable properties such as low magnetic resonance linewidths. Examples of fabrication methods and RF-related properties are also disclosed.

摘要： For patterning a magnetic garnet layer formed on the surface of a non-magnetic garnet substrate, the magnetic garnet layer, an intermediate layer and a resist layer are formed in this order from the substrate side, the intermediate layer and the resist layer are shaped in the state of an island, and then the magnetic garnet layer is etched in a hot phosphoric acid solution, the intermediate layer being composed of a material which is more soluble in the hot phosphoric acid solution than the resist layer so that the etched magnetic garnet layer side face is formed as a gently inclined face and that a conductor pattern extending on both the non-magnetic garnet substrate and magnetic garnet layer surfaces can be formed without breaking, or a protective resist layer being formed on the reverse surface of the substrate so that the application angle of a magnetic field to the magnetic garnet layer surface can be accurately controlled.

One example of the material is made of magnetic garnet single crystals expressed by a composition formula of Nd.sub.3-x Bi.sub.x Fe.sub.5 O.sub.12 (0.5.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1.9), the single crystals being formed by liquid-phase epitaxial growth on a non-magnetic garnet substrate having a lattice constant specified in the range of 12.61 .ANG..ltoreq.a.ltoreq.12.63 .ANG.. The material is suitably used for a magneto-optical element having a wavelength band from 950 to 1070 nm. The non-magnetic garnet substrate can be made of a material having a composition formula expressed by Gd.sub.3-y Nd.sub.y Sc.sub.2 Ga.sub.3 O.sub.12 (1.0.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.1.4).

摘要： A bistable single crystal magneto-optic film of preselected coercivity is described. The film is readily switchable and is characterized by a substantially square shaped hysteresis loop. The film properties are attributed to controlled introduction in the film of defects of predetermined size and distribution. Defects of from about 0.4 .mu.m to about 4.0 .mu.m present in numbers per cm.sup.2 of from about 10 to about 10.sup.6, with optimal distribution falling in the range of from about 100 to about 1000, are described. Also described are methods of achieving the required defect size and distribution utilizing procedures such as ion bombardment, particle abrasion/deposition, laser ablation or annealing of the film or substrate upon which the film is supported. Devices in which the films can be used to advantage, such as flaw detecting, imaging and microwave processing, are described.
