    • There is disclosed a control apparatus (12) for a power supply system (2) operable at a fluctuating line voltage, the system further comprising an energy storage device (10), and the control apparatus further comprising a line voltage monitor (14) and an energy storage device controller (12), wherein the control apparatus is configured whereby the energy storage device is at least partly discharged if the line voltage falls below a first predetermined voltage and the energy storage device is at least partly charged if the line voltage exceeds a second predetermined voltage and in which the first predetermined voltage is substantially lower than the second predetermined voltage. A power supply system (12) incorporating such a control apparatus is disclosed, as is a method of control thereof.

    • A hot-swappable, point-to-point connection between a high speed transmitter on a transmitter card and a high speed receiver on a receiver card is provided. The transmitter card and the receiver card can be inserted into a backplane, the backplane forming the connection between the transmitter and the receiver. The system includes a power indicator on the transmitter card and the receiver card, with each power indicator asserting a power signal to respective switch control inputs on the transmitter and receiver cards when the respective cards are inserted into the backplane. The assertion or unassertion of a power signal to the control inputs allows for the disabling of the receiver when the transmitter is not connected to the backplane and the disabling of the transmitter when the receiver is not connected to the backplane, thereby preventing transmitter output EMI and ringing and receiver input oscillation.

    • An alternator includes a flywheel for storing kinetic energy. A motor generator, which includes permanent magnets mounted to a rotor, receives electrical power for accelerating the rotor to a high rotational velocity to store kinetic energy. The rotor is provided with coils, and each coil is connected to first and second conductors. The exterior portion of the rotor comprises the flywheel. Stator coils are mounted adjacent to coils of the rotor and electrical power is produced within the stator coils. The kinetic energy stored in the rotor flywheel can be transformed to electrical power through a first output which is the coils of the motor generator and can produce a second electrical output through the stator coils of the alternator. The primary application of such a dual power alternator is to produce a high power pulse for an electromagnetic gun, and to also provide averaging power to supplement the power from the main drive engine of a vehicle.
