    • An apparatus for driving a solid-state image sensor includes a sensor portion for performing a photoelectric conversion, a vertical transfer register for reading information from the sensor portion, a memory for storing information from the vertical transfer register, and an eliminating unit for eliminating information from the sensor portion, wherein the information in the sensor portion is eliminated by the eliminating unit intermittently two or more times in one field interval, whereby information storage time is controlled. In one field interval, operation of the eliminating unit is performed successively every time T.sub.2 after time T.sub.1 from a vertical synchronizing signal, the information from the sensor portion is read in the vertical shift register successively, at every operation of the eliminating unit, a time T.sub.3 after the end of this operation, and the first time T.sub.1, second time T.sub.2 and third time T.sub.3 are controlled so as to vary independently or in association, whereby virtual storage time of the sensor portion in one field interval is controlled.

    • An electric power consumption and a quantity of generated heat can be reduced and hence a temperature characteristic can be maintained satisfactorily. A timing generator generates a smear gate pulse and a storage section driving pulse. The smear gate pulse is supplied to a smear gate region, whereby the smear gate region is opened during a vertical blanking period. The smear gate pulse and the storage section driving pulse are input to a gate circuit and an image section driving pulse is output from the gate circuit. The image section driving pulse has a waveform corresponding to a waveform which results from eliminating a line shift pulse from the storage section driving pulse. In the present invention, since the line shift pulse is not contained in the image section driving pulse, an electric power consumed by an image section is reduced considerably as compared with the prior art. Therefore, a quantity of generated heat also can be reduced, and a temperature characteristic of a frame interline transfer (FIT) solid state image sensor can be maintained satisfactorily.

    • An electronic image stabilization method and apparatus has application for use in hand-held video camcorders. The electronic image stabilization apparatus, contained within the camcorder, comprises a definition television (HDTV) image sensor with photosensitive cells, a gimbaled lens configuration and signal processing circuitry. The lens configuration projects a subject image upon only a portion of the image sensor. As the hand-held camcorder is physically jittered, the lens configuration projects the subject image on a different portion of HDTV image sensor. A scanner circuit reads values from the cells, and a threshold circuit compares the values to a pre-determined threshold value. If the photosensitive cell value is greater, the the projected subject image in the larger HDTV image array is determined, only the photosensitive cells illuminated by the projected subject image extracted from the HDTV image sensor. As a result, jitter in the output image, caused by hand-held shakes, is reduce or eliminated.
