    • This invention provides a system and method for automatic (non-manual) calibration of one or more cameras employs a tessellating calibration plate having a checkerboard tile pattern and a plurality of 2D codes embedded within the checkerboard pattern. Each 2D code encodes the (X,Y) coordinates that identify tile calibration feature locations in the pattern, and the remaining, surrounding tiles allow measurement of the corner positions as calibration features. One or more vision system camera(s) can be calibrated to a single coordinate system automatically. During calibration, an image of at least a portion of a calibration plate is acquired, the encoded data is decoded for at least one 2D code within the field of view of each camera and then the position of the field of view is determined on the calibration plate for each camera using the 2D code data and the checkerboard tile pattern.

    • Methods and thermal imaging cameras are provided for registering visible-light and infrared images within a thermal imaging camera to reduce a parallax error in the images. Registration generally includes detecting a first feature set in the visible-light image data, detecting a second feature set in the infrared image data and generating a plurality of overlapping alignments of the infrared image data and the visible-light image data. A similarity figure is calculated as a function of the relative alignment of the first feature set and the second feature set for each alignment and the alignment with the desired similarity figure is selected. The images are aligned and the camera displays at least a portion of the visible-light image data and/or at least a portion of the infrared image data.

    • Various embodiments of a dual-sensor video camera are disclosed. The dual-sensor video camera includes a color filter array (CFA) sensor, which has a low-pass filter. The dual-sensor video camera also includes a panchromatic sensor. A beam splitter directs an incoming light beam to both sensors. An output image is produced based on image information from the two sensors. The output image includes luminance information based on the image information from the panchromatic sensor and chrominance information based on the image information from the CFA sensor.

    • A solid state image pickup apparatus includes a solid state image pickup device for receiving an optical image of an object and generating an electrical image signal representing the optical image of the object in synchronism with a driving pulse from a driving circuit. A sampling circuit generates a sampled image signal by sampling the electrical image signal read out of the solid state image pickup device with a first sampling pulse from a first pulse circuit synchronized with the driving pulse. An analog-to-digital convertor converts the sampled image signal to a digital image signal with a second sampling pulse from a second pulse circuit. A test signal generator generates a test signal which is synchronized with the driving pulse and alternately changes in level between consecutive pixels. A controller controls the phase of the first sampling pulse and the phase of the second sampling pulse relative to each other by processing the test signal.
