    • A wireless network device, such as a printer, to enter an infrastructure-type user wireless LAN as a station, has an additional access point function. A printer having an ESS-ID ‘MM’ as an initial setting is connected with a user wireless LAN, which includes an access point and a personal computer and uses a common ESS-ID ‘XX’. In this case, the procedure changes the ESS-ID set in the personal computer to ‘MM’ to establish an infrastructure-type communication with the printer. This arrangement enables the ESS-ID set in the printer to be changed to the common ESS-ID ‘XX’ for the user wireless LAN without varying the ESS-ID set in the access point. The technique of the invention ensures easy connection of any device without sufficient input interfaces to the wireless LAN.

    • A method of receiving digitized data encoded to permit forward error correction, for example convolutionally encoded data transmitted in a burst-mode radio communication system such as GSM. Prior to transmission a set of first data elements (bits) relating to a first message which may be associated with a first channel type (e.g. a traffic channel (TCH) in GSM) has selected bits substituted or stolen by data elements (bits) relating to a second message which may be associated with a second channel type (e.g. a fast associated channel (FACCH) in GSM). At the receiver the second message is recovered by extracting the substitute data elements. In order to improve bit error rate performance the received data is then modified by replacing the substitute data elements with low-or zero-valued "soft decisions", i.e. further data elements comprising respective components indicative of the low level of confidence associated therewith relative to the original data element. The modified data is decoded using, for example a Viterbi decoder (4) sensitive to the soft decisions to estimate the most likely set of data elements comprising the first message.

    • A telephone capable of operation in a cordless or corded mode. The telephone is basically operative in the cordless mode through the provision of electronic transmitting and receiving elements individual to the base unit and the portable handset. The base unit and the handset are provided with conversion switching circuits coupled to be responsive to the connection of a multi-conductor cord between the base unit and the handset to convert the telephone to corded operation. The conversion circuits disable the transmitting and receiving circuits in both the base and handset and permit the telephone signals to be conductively transmitted between the units through the conductors of the cord.

    • A cellular radiotelephone system providing service to remote units having a voice operated transmitter (VOX) is disclosed. If the regularly scheduled periodic signal quality measurements made by fixed site equipment indicate that the remote unit signal has not been received for a predetermined number of measurements, an audit request is transmitted to the remote unit. The remote unit responsively keys its transmitter for a predetermined period of time. A first special scan is programmed into the regular process such that the fixed site equipment may continue with its regular process until the signal quality measurement must be made. A second measurement is made following the first and if the two signal quality measurements made while the VOX remote unit is known to be transmitting agree, system reconfiguration for the service of this remote unit may be implemented by the cellular system.

    • A mobile telephone location system is provided wherein a plurality of mobile telephone exchanges, each of which controls an area and is in a position to monitor the presence of mobile telephone units within its own area, are connected with a national center. The national center is capable of receiving requests for the location of mobile telephone units from each of the mobile telephone exchanges and transmit location information via satellite to all of the mobile telephone exchanges within the system. The mobile telephone exchange in whose area the paged mobile telephone unit is located sends location information to the national center or directly to the originating mobile telephone exchange. This location information contains information pertaining to the identity of the mobile telephone exchange and the mobile telephone. This data is transmitted by the national center to the mobile telephone exchange which issued the request enabling the exchange to make the connection.
