    • A multi-function feedback sense input in an electronic ballast control indicates a number of lamp faults on the basis of lamp parameters exceeding specified thresholds. An end of life detection is achieved by conditioning a lamp feedback with a DC offset to provide a simple threshold comparison to determine if the lamp exceeds specified operational boundaries. An open filament, absent lamp or broken cathode is detected on the same feedback sense by detecting an open circuit in the lamp filament and driving the sense feedback to a shutdown state in the event of a filament open circuit. The ballast control includes a current sense feedback for detecting overcurrent conditions as well as lamp faults so that the control detects an end of life condition, lamp absence, broken lamp, open filament, broken cathode, overcurrent, hardswitching or failure to ignite fault with a minimum number of feedback sensors. The ballast control provides a number of protections with a simplified circuit to reduce cost and improve functionality of the electronic ballast control.

    • An electronic ballast for a discharge lamps has a dimming control for varying an input DC voltage and an input driving frequency in combination to achieve a lamp dimming in accordance with a dimmer demand. The ballast includes a dimming processor with a memory for storing a table that gives a predetermined relation between the dimming demand and a voltage command designating the input DC voltage as well as a frequency command designating the input driving frequency. A command processing unit is included in the processor to derive the voltage and frequency commands that matches with the dimmer demand so as to vary the light output of the lamp in accordance with the voltage command and the frequency command, respectively derived from the table.

    • A ballast control may include a digitally controlled oscillator to provide a precise and consistent oscillation frequency for switching a half-bridge circuit in the electronic ballast. The ballast control may include a digital memory device for storing ballast control operational parameters. A controller can access the digital memory to retrieve parameter values and apply them to various ballast control components. A counter in the ballast control counts a number of events, such as an over current event, and provides a signal when a predetermined count is reached to contribute to identifying fault conditions. The controller may contain one or more timers to time durations related to events in the electronic ballast, such as the initiation of an ignition current. The digital nature of the ballast control permits a wide degree of flexibility in providing operational set points and reacting to conditions in the electronic ballast and simplifies the ballast control.

    • A plasma generator for space charge neutralization of an ion beam is disclosed and resides within an ion implantation system operable to generate an ion beam and direct the ion beam along a beamline path. The plasma generator comprises an electric field generation system operable to generate an electric field in a portion of the beamline path, and a magnetic field generation system operable to generate a magnetic field in the portion of the beamline path, wherein the magnetic field is perpendicular to the electric field. The plasma generator further comprises a gas source operable to introduce a gas in a region occupied by the electric field and the magnetic field. Electrons in the region move in the region due to the electric field and the magnetic field, respectively, and at least some of the electrons collide with the gas in the region to ionize a portion of the gas, thereby generating a plasma in the region.
