    • Lighting systems for remote placement and powering of a lighting device. The lighting systems include a lighting device for placement on a wall or ceiling and an external power supply selectively attachable to and detachable from the lighting device. The lighting device includes a power receiving structure that receives power from the external power supply and delivers electrical power to a rechargeable battery and/or light source. The external power supply includes a corresponding power delivery structure that delivers power to the power receiving structure of the lighting device. The power receiving and delivery structures may constitute an inductive power transfer system composed of one or more batteries or capacitors, a DC-to-AC inverter, electromagnetic power transfer and receiving coils, and an AC-to-DC convertor or rectifier. Alternatively, the power receiving and delivering structures may constitute direct electrical contacts.

    • A discharge lamp lighting device includes: a direct current power supply circuit that outputs direct current power; an inverter circuit that converts the direct current power, which is outputted by the direct current power supply circuit, into alternating current power, and supplies the alternating current power to a discharge lamp; a control circuit that controls a frequency of an output of the inverter circuit (operation frequency); and a starting detection circuit that detects beginning (starting) of a discharge in the discharge lamp. The control circuit operates in a starting improvement mode, in which the operation frequency is lowered than an operation frequency in a lighting mode, during a predetermined time from when the starting of the discharge lamp is detected by the starting detection circuit 4 during a no-load mode. Thereafter, the control circuit shifts to the lighting mode in which lighting of the discharge lamp is maintained. In such a way, the discharge lamp can be smoothly shifted to stable lighting.

    • An electronic ballast for a discharge lamp includes a predictive circuit and a correction circuit in addition to a power conversion circuit including an inverter circuit and a resonant circuit, a drive circuit and a frequency control circuit. The inverter circuit applies load voltage across a load circuit including the lamp via the resonant circuit. The predictive circuit predicts a resonance frequency of the combination of the resonant circuit and the load circuit after ignition of the lamp. The resonance frequency is predicted based on an input signal representing the load voltage in the period of time from the start of sweep of the inverter circuit's operating frequency through a time point immediately after ignition of the lamp. The correction circuit changes the end frequency of the sweep to the resonance frequency.
