    • An electrical ballast system having a toroidal current transformer having a core with a gap of predetermined dimensions, a primary winding, and a secondary winding. The primary winding is connected in series to a lamp load circuit and the secondary winding is connected to a transistor driver having an input. The improvement comprises the reduction of the effective area of the transformer core a sufficient amount to limit the output voltage amplitude of the secondary winding within a predetermined range compatible with the input of the transistor driver. The reduction of the effective area of the core is achieved with a cut or gap that covers up to 75% of the effective cross-sectional area. The resulting transformer will operate linearly for low load currents passing through the lamp and primary. For load currents above a predetermined magnitude, the core is saturated and additional magnetic flux lines pass through the gap, attenuated. The waveform of the current through the primary is thus kept in the secondary, attenuated, thereby protecting the transistors' inputs connected to the secondary.

    • A ballast comprises an inverter having a transformer comprising a core, a primary winding, and a secondary winding for connecting to a lamp and providing voltage thereto. The ballast includes a fault condition detection circuit connected to the inverter for disabling the inverter to discontinue energization of the lamp when a fault condition occurs. The fault condition detection circuit comprises an other primary winding wound on the core of the transformer for receiving a voltage signal proportional to a voltage across the secondary winding, a voltage blocking circuit connected to the other primary winding for receiving the voltage signal from the other primary winding, and a capacitor connected between the voltage blocking circuit and ground potential. The voltage blocking circuit is configured to selectively conduct and block the received voltage signal as a function of the frequency of the received voltage signal.

    • A power supply system is provided for a multiple lamp LCD panel. In one aspect, the power supply includes a plurality of transformers for driving a plurality of respective CCFLs. The primary sides of each transformer are coupled in series to thereby reduce the stress on each transformer. For LCD panels that include longer CCFLs, a power supply is provided that includes a plurality of transformers for driving a plurality of respective CCFLs. The primary sides of each transformer are coupled in series and each lamp is coupled to two secondary sides of the transformers, thereby reducing the problems associated with longer CCFL tubes. In any of the embodiments, the power supply can be adapted to convert a high voltage DC signal to high voltage AC used to power the lamps.
