    • An athletic knee protector is disclosed wherein a bowed leaf spring hinge structure is supported on load distribution pads or cuffs attached to the thigh and shin of the wearer and is spaced laterally from the lateral side of the knee to protect the knee of an athlete against injury from lateral forces and impacts such as are likely to occur in football. The bowed leaf spring hinge structure absorbs such forces and impacts and redistributes them at locations spaced substantially above and below the knee proximate the strong bones of the leg. Preloading of knee ligaments in the lateral/medial direction is avoided, and lateral forces and impacts are better distributed, by connecting the pads or cuffs to the hinge structure with a free rocking or pivoting action in the lateral/medial direction. Also, the pads or cuffs are made more adaptable to the curvature of the leg by a variable flexibility in the anterior/posterior direction so that attachment and working loads applied to the leg are spread out more uniformly.

    • A portable, patient-controlled medication delivery system includes an infusion pump, a catheter assembly and an extension tubing set. The infusion pump retains a treatment fluid and provides a drive mechanism for delivering the treatment fluid to a patient. The catheter assembly has a medicine catheter which penetrates directly into the treatment site of the patient and the extension tubing set has an extension tube which connects the medicine catheter and infusion pump. The infusion pump includes a fluid reservoir, a dosage chamber, and a displacement piston displacable within the dosage chamber. An elastic member is also positioned in the infusion pump to exert a displacement force on the displacement piston. The elastic member is alternately transitionable between a more stressed position and a less stressed position. The elastic member elastically displaces the displacement piston in a first direction to expand the dosage chamber and draw the treatment fluid from the fluid reservoir into the dosage chamber when the elastic member transitions from the more stressed position to the less stressed position. The displacement piston is manually displaced in a second direction to contract the dosage chamber and discharge the treatment fluid from the dosage chamber to the treatment site when the elastic member transitions from the less stressed position to the more stressed position.

    • A hinge is provided for an orthopedic brace having an adjustable range of rotation. The hinge includes an outer member and an inner member that are rotatably connected in parallel alignment to one another. The peripheral edge of the outer member has a plurality of rotation limiting notches formed therein and the peripheral edge of the inner member has a rotation limiting face formed therein that is selectively alignable with one of the rotation limiting notches. Each of the peripheral edges also has a locking notch formed therein that is selectively alignable with the other. A rotation limiting stop is provided at the peripheral edge of the inner and outer members that is selectively positionable in one of the rotation limiting notches to define an adjustable range of rotation during a rotation mode of hinge operation. Rotation of the inner member is limited when the rotation limiting face engages the rotation limiting stop positioned in the selected notch. Alternatively, the rotation limiting stop is selectively positionable in the locking notches to lock the hinge against rotation in a locked mode of hinge operation. The hinge also includes a stop retainer, which retains the rotation limiting stop in the selected rotation limiting notch or locking notch during a rotation or locking mode of hinge operation, respectively, and which enables repositioning of the rotation limiting stop in an alternately selected rotation limiting notch during an adjustment mode of operation.

    • A pad is provided for therapeutically treating bodily injuries or ailments by positioning the pad on an affected part of the body and circulating a nonambient temperature treatment fluid through the pad. The pad has a bladder that is a symmetrical planar member configured in sections conformable to the contours of the body, thereby facilitating heat exchange between the pad and the patient. Included are a relatively wide main section and extension section that are fluid-communicatively joined with one another at the axis of symmetry across a relatively narrow connective section. The extension section is oblong-shaped, having a longitudinal axis aligned substantially perpendicular to the axis of symmetry and substantially parallel to the forward and rearward edges of the planar member. To specifically resist occlusion from kinking in the region of fluid ports into and out of the planar member, a portion of the planar member proximal and adjacent to the inlet and outlet ports is constructed in a manner that renders it substantially less flexible than the remainder of the planar member by affixing a patch of stiffened material to the surface of the planar member in the region of the inlet and outlet ports.
