    • A method is described for obtaining quantitative data on the response of individual components of a human knee to external stresses which comprises having an anthropomorphic knee device which includes individual component means for simulating at least one principal component of the knee and load determining means which after calibration are used to determine the effect on the equivalent component in a human knee joint resulting from that external stress. Also described in an anthropomorphic leg device for performing the method in which cables represent the principal components of the knee and are operably connected to load cells so that the stresses imparted to each of the principal components by a traumatic impact can be individually measured and assessed. Measurements with this invention are found to correlate closely to the stresses in the respective components, such as ligaments and muscle groups, of the human knee. The invention is thus ideally suited for analyzing knee injuries, for teaching medical and emergency personnel to identify various types of knee injuries and for testing of knee braces and other orthopedic devices.

    • A knee brace for externally replacing the function of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The brace has femur and tibia levers hinged proximal the knee joint. The femur lever has an upper high cuff which bears against the front of the thigh and a lower strap which applies anterior force to the back of the thigh proximal the knee, while the tibia lever has a lower calf cuff which bears against the back of the calf and an upper strap which applies posterior force to the front of the tibia proximal the knee. Thus, the two straps apply a differential force couple forwardly to the femur and rearwardly to the tibia proximal the knee joint which serves the anterior cruciate ligament function. A resilient tubular undersleeve anchors the brace against downward migration on the leg.

    • A hinge assembly for a knee brace includes a screw seat, a screw seat gear, an adjustment screw, a condyle engagement member, and an adjustment actuator gear. The screw seat has a bore with an internal thread. The screw seat gear is positioned at an end of the screw seat and the screw seat rotates in response to rotation of the screw seat gear. The adjustment actuator gear engages the screw seat gear and the screw seat gear rotates in response to rotation of the adjustment actuator gear. The adjustment screw has an external thread that is threaded into the internal thread of the screw seat, thereby enabling outward or inward telescoping of the adjustment screw within the bore in response to rotation of the adjustment actuator gear. The adjustment screw is connected to the condyle engagement member, thereby enabling proximal displacement of the condyle engagement member in response to outward telescoping of the adjustment screw and enabling distal displacement of the condyle engagement member in response to inward telescoping of the adjustment screw.

    • A device for therapeutically treating a desired region of a patient's body with a nonambient temperature fluid includes a fluid feed reservoir, a fluid collection reservoir, and a fluid flowpath therebetween. The flowpath is made up of a heat transfer pad placed over the desired treatment region, an inlet line leading from the feed reservoir to the pad, and an outlet line leading from the pad to the collection reservoir. In operation, the feed reservoir is charged with a nonambient temperature fluid and maintained at a height substantially greater than the height of the collection reservoir to provide a fluid head sufficient to transport the fluid from the feed reservoir to the collection reservoir across the flowpath. In so doing, the pad provides therapeutic treatment to the region of the body that it contacts. The temperature of the pad is controlled by maintaining a height differential between the fluid levels in the feed reservoir and the collection reservoir.
