141 MULTIPLE-MODE WING-IN GROUND EFFECT VEHICLE PCT/US1997002691 1997-02-24 WO1997030886A1 1997-08-28
A high-speed air-supported vehicle capable of multiple mode operations as both a water-contacting vehicle and an aircraft includes an aero roll-stabilizing plan form (3), a stabilizing ski/hydrofoil below a planing surface of a hull portion of the aero roll-stabilizing plan form (3) for providing stabilization and lift to the plan form (3) in at least one mode of operation, the ski/hydrofoil being mounted to a front underside of a hull portion of the aero roll-stabilizing plan form (3) and being mounted forward of a centre of gravity of the plan form (3), whereby a leading edge of the plan form is kept at a substantially constant level with respect to a surface of water during at least one mode of operation. A stabilizing ski (9) provides stabilization and lift in at least one mode of operation. A flexible ski mount (7, 8) is provided for mounting the stabilizing ski (9) to the aero roll-stabilizing plan form (3). Trim flaps (105) are provided for altering the direction of the plan form (3), and turning vanes (5a, 5b) are provided to reduce turbulence originating near the edge of the tip plates (71a, 71b).

144 Lift augmented ground effect platform US236646 1994-05-02 US5803199A 1998-09-08 William C. Walter
The lift augmented ground effect platform of the present invention is characterized by two pair of annular concentric air curtain nozzles and supercharge nozzles which direct respective jet streams downward and inward beneath the downwardly facing lifting surface of the platform. The concentric arrangement of the nozzles provides an inner or central supercharged air cushion surrounded by an inner central air curtain and an outer or peripheral air cushion surrounded by a peripheral air curtain. The lift augmented ground effect platform of the present invention provides an increased or "large" augmentation of the forces acting to raise or lift the platform over that experienced in prior ground effect devices by directing an air flow stream over the downwardly curved peripheral surface of the platform. As the air flows downwardly along the curvature of the platform's peripheral surface, it creates a pressure differential which provides an additional force supporting the lifting of the platform. The airflow stream and the jet stream are provided by a propeller or rotating fan device mounted exterior of the platform. The exterior mounting provides two benefits: first, the propeller or fan stall due to the jet stream source is eliminated and second, smooth transition into free air (out of ground effect) is permitted where necessary to navigate rivers, canyons, and other types of physical barriers which may disrupt ground effect operation.

146 Leading edge augmentor wing-in-ground effect vehicle US413182 1982-08-30 US4442986A 1984-04-17 David G. Rousseau
A Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect vehicle for traveling over water utilizing efflux from propulsors to create a static pressure increase under the wings. The propulsors are carried inside the fuselage or in other safe locations away from sea spray and debris. The efflux is carried by conduit running the full span of the wing leading edge and is directed under the wing. The efflux also entrains ambient air by Coanda effect to increase the resultant lift.
147 Trim-correcting facility for ground effect machines US3797399D 1972-03-09 US3797399A 1974-03-19 BERTIN J; CROIX MARIE
An air cushion suspension system for a ground effect machine comprising in combination a movable disc bearing cushioncontaining means and balanced by the cushion pressure acting on one side of the disc and by an opposing pressure acting on the opposite side of the disc, the opposing pressure existing in a deformable suspension chamber in which a tubular air chamber is disposed, the tubular air chamber being adapted to be inflated to a pressure above the opposing pressure and to bear against the disc to provide extra stiffness in the suspension. The flexible wall of the tubular air chamber is, in the balanced state and with the machine operating normally, clear either of the disc of the suspension chamber wall opposite the disc, so that the extra stiffness is introduced into the suspension only with effect from a particular amount of deformation of the disc suspension chamber, the tubular air chamber forming a kind of resilient abutment.
148 Lift augmented ground effect platform US15042 1998-01-28 US6082478A 2000-07-04 William C. Walter; Marshel Thomas Johnson
The present invention provides an increased or "large" augmentation of the forces acting to raise or lift the platform over that experienced in prior ground effect devices by directing an air flow stream over the downwardly curved peripheral surface of the platform. As the air flows downwardly along the curvature of the platform's peripheral surface, it creates a negative pressure differential which provides an additional lifting force contributing to support of the platform. The airflow stream and the jet stream are provided by, for example, propeller(s) or rotating fan device(s) mounted exterior or interior of the platform. The exterior mounting or specialized interior mounting provides two benefits: first, the propeller or fan stall due to the jet stream source is eliminated and second, smooth transition into free air (out of ground effect) is permitted where necessary to navigate rivers, canyons, and other types of physical barriers which may disrupt ground effect operation. An unpowered variation of the platform may be adapted for releasable attachment to a separate powered vehicle to serve as a performance enhancing lift augmentation platform.
149 Confining system for ground-effect machine US3647018D 1969-12-29 US3647018A 1972-03-07 CROIX-MARIE FRANCIS MARIE JEAN; GRIGNON ROBERT GEORGES
An arrangement for sustaining and/or guiding a load such as a machine or vehicle over a bearing surface by means of air cushions confined in a chamber formed inside an annular troughshaped inflatable wall between said bearing surface and a movable partition forming with the load and an annular deformable wall a chamber of a variable volume. The input of a compressed fluid into the latter feeds through ports in the partition the cushionconfining chamber so that the latter is sustained at a small self-adjusting distance over the bearing surface.

154 Air cushion trunk for ground effect machines US3727716D 1971-04-05 US3727716A 1973-04-17 JENKINS D
An air cushion trunk sealing system for ground effect machines is provided to prevent air leakage from the trunk during periods of operation and parking when the primary power of the machine or craft is turned off. This system is composed of an inner tube type liner (which may be, and preferably is, constructed of multiple cells) which is collapsed, doubled and attached to the underside of the craft and within the trunk. Before the trunk air is turned off, air of higher pressure than trunk pressure is routed into the collapsed inner tube to inflate it. As this inner tube inflates, it replaces the trunk air while the trunk air flow is still providing craft support. When the inner tube is fully inflated, the air to the trunk is fully diverted overboard and the inner tube now supports the craft. The inner tube valve is closed to contain the air and the trunk air may be turned off.

This disclosure describes a system and method for operating an automated aerial vehicle wherein influences of a ground effect may be utilized for sensing the ground or other surfaces. In various implementations, an operating parameter of the automated aerial vehicle may be monitored to determine when a ground effect is influencing the parameter, which correspondingly indicates a proximity to a surface (e.g., the ground). In various implementations, the ground effect based sensing techniques may be utilized for determining a proximity to the ground, as a backup for a primary sensor system, for determining if a landing location is uneven, etc.
