The invention provides a currency selectable stored value instrument, whose currency may be chosen or converted at the time value is loaded, after load but prior to redemption of value, at the time of redemption, or at other times. One embodiment of the system is configured so that the stored value instrument may be a plastic card with a magnetic stripe, compatible with card readers on Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) or other terminals. In one embodiment, U.S. dollars may be converted to Mexican pesos when the stored value instrument is loaded at an ATM or other location in the United States. A user may subsequently redeem that value for legal tender in pesos at an ATM located in Mexico, for example, or for goods, services, or cash in other currencies.

The customer then returns the post card to a processing center (430) through the postal service. The returned post card is processed to gather customer information (432) and to determine the amount of postage affixed to the card (436). The customer informaiton is provided to the marketer (400) to fulfill the premium offer. The marketer (400) is also provided with funds based on the amount of postage affixed.

The apparatus includes an optical system composed of plates (3 and 4) between which the document moves, at least one mirror (11) which directs the image at a lineal photosensor (8), a diaphragm (10) which corrects luminosity and focus, and a meniscus lens (9), there also being a source of infrared illumination (13) and a broad spectrum light source (14).

The signal is based on a rotationally symmetric pattern and is machine-detectable from visible light reading of the analog form, but the signal is imperceptible upon human inspection of the analog form. The method includes acts of: collecting visible light data corresponding to the analog form; transforming the visible light data to a complementary domain; inspecting the transformed data for the rotationally symmetric pattern, wherein presence of said pattern indicates presence of the signal; and taking an action based on presence of the signal.
