The rotary valve (5) may be set to one of three positions: milking, backwashing and cleaning. In the first two positions the connector stubs (11, 12, 13) are in sealed contact with the end faces (9 and 10) of the rotary valve (5) and between the half-casings (2, 3) which can move axially in relation to each other there is a channel (20) providing a connection between the interior (4) and the atmosphere. Leaks can thus flow away freely. Before the entire milking machine is rinsed with a cleaning solution, the rotary valve (5) is moved into the cleaning position shown on Fig. 3. In this position, a recess (22) in the end face (9) of the rotary valve (5) allows the half-casing (2) to move with respect to half-casing (3) into a sealing position. The cleaning solution flowing through the milking machine passes via the first connector stub (11) and the recess (21) into the interior (4) of the casing (1) and leaves the interior (4) via the recess (22) and the second connector stub (12). Here, both the interior (4) and the rotary valve (5) are deeply cleaned.

A teat cup assembly for automatic milking machines employing a vacuum milk line and a pulsating vacuum line is disclosed. The assembly comprises a rigid, tubular outer shell 11 and an elongate, tubular, inflation member (13) having a novel mouth-forming diaphragm (20) at one end thereof for engaging the teat of a cow to retain the teat cup assembly from falling off the teat at the end point of milking. A sleeve member (17) is adapted to secure the upper end of the inflation (13) in expanded condition to the upper end of the shell (11). The sleeve member (17) is also adapted to receive the mouth-forming diaphragm (20). The mouth-forming diaphragm (20) has a central opening (21) for receiving the teat of a cow, with the central opening (21) having a circumference smaller than the cross-sectional circumference of the inflation (13). A protective cap member (23) fits over the mouth-forming diaphragm (20) and sleeve member (17). A lower cap member (15) is adapted to secure the lower end of the inflation (13) in expanded condition to the lower end of the shell (11), with the lower cap member (15) having a nipple (16) for connection to the vacuum milk line. The shell (11) has a port (12) therein adapted to be connected to a pulsating vacuum line. The mouth-forming member (20) is preferably molded from silicone rubber and the inflation (13) is made from extruded, tubular silicone rubber.

A milking cup having a sleeve-like cup and a rubber teat holder inserted therein. The rubber teat holder has a suction sleeve portion which is connected at the lower end to a milk discharge pipe connected to a vacuum source. An underpressure relief valve is provided on the milking cup. A tube is connected to and extends between the underpressure relief valve and either the suction sleeve or a member which is connected to and is positioned between the lower end of the suction sleeve and the milk discharge pipe. The end of the tube projects into a passageway defined by the suction sleeve or the member and terminates approximately at the midpoint of the passageway.
