PURPOSE:To provide sufficient heat resistance to the title film and to obtain the polarization power equiv. to the polarization characteristic of iodine by adsorbing and orienting at least one kind of specific azo dyes to a high-polymer film. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of the azo dyes expressed by formula I is adsorbed and oriented in the high-polymer film. In formula, Q<1> and Q<4> denote a hydroxyl group, amino group, etc.; Q<2> and Q<3> denote a naphthalene ring or alkyl group, etc., substd. by an SO3M group; (m) denotes 0 or 1; R<1> and R<2> denote a hydroxyl group or amino group; 80-98mol.% of the total quantity of M denotes lithium and the balance denotes sodium. A hydrophilic film is preferable as the high-polymer film and the film which has good solubility in water or hydrophilic org. solvent, has good compatibility with dyes, has excellent film formability and allows easy orientation of the dyes at the time of stretching and orienting the film after film formation is more preferable. While the use of the dyes along is possible, the more neutral color is obtd. and the higher degree of polarization is obtd. by using the dyes in combination. The excellent heat resistance and the polarization power equiv. to the polarization power of the conventional polarizing film formed by using the iodine is thereby obtd.
