The substance may be, e.g. a water sol. dye such as basic dye, an insol. dye such as sulfide dye, or an image forming dye such as color coupler. Cpds. of formula I include the Ni metal complex of formula III obtd. by the reaction of N,N'-ethylenebis(monothioaetylacetoneimine) with nickel acetate, and the cpd. of formula II may be used as a cpd. of formula IV.
