The present invention provides a viscosity index improving lubricant additive which comprises an olefinic oligomer of about 2,000 to about 20,000 number average molecular weight having a viscosity of 75 to about 3,000 cSt at 100 ~C and a hydrocarbyl aromatic which contains at least about 5 % of its weight from aromatic moieties having a viscosity of about 3 to about 50 cSt at 100 ~C where the weight ratio of hydrocarbyl aromatic component to olefin oligomer is from about 1:2 to about 50:1. In another aspect, the invention provides for a lubricating oil composition comprising a base oil and the instant viscosity index improving additive.

A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating oil and a polyalkylated polyhydroxy benzenoid compound containing at least three primary or secondary alkyl groups having at least twelve carbon atoms per group, and at least two phenolic hydroxy groups. The benzenoid compound, which acts as a high temperature anti-oxidant, may have one or more benzene nuclei, and these may be fused or separated by alkylene groups. Numerous examples are listed, including tri-(2-hexadecyl)-catechol, tris - dodecyl - 2,3 - dehydroxynaphthalene, bis - [tri - (2 - hexadecyl) - catechol] methane, and the products of alkylation of polyhydroxy benzenoid compounds with C15-C20 mixed olefin fractions or chlorinated waxes containing 24 to 26 carbon atoms per molecule. The benzenoid compound may comprise 0.1 to 10% by weight of the lubricant, and may be added in the form of its zinc, magnesium, barium, calcium or the salt. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil, synthetic ester, synthetic hydrocarbon, silicone, polyalkylene oxide, phosphorus ester, polypropylene glycol. The composition may also include detergents, rust inhibitors, pour-point improvers, V.I. improvers and supplemental antioxidants.
