In a cylinder for a hydraulic system, a seal has a sealing bead clamped between a housing of the cylinder and a supporting part which holds the sealing bead in a deformed state by pretensioning. The seal is reliably held in its intended position by the supporting part and, therefore, pressure fluctuations in the pressure space do not cause a relative movement of the seal and wear of the sealing bead.

The ridge (22) which delimits the groove (4) on one side is very short so that the flank of the groove to which the clamping ring (6) is applied does not overlap the adjacent front of the sealing ring (5). The clamping ring (6), which is arranged as a limit stop between the flank formed by a recess (13) in the sealing ring (5) and the opposite flank of the groove (4), is not merely, as in the prior art, a secondary sealing element, but is also a retaining element for axial fastening of the sealing ring (5). This arrangement allows the sealing ring (5) to be applied to the machine part (1) without being deformed and to be fastened by means of the readily deformable clamping ring (6).

Radial shaft sealing ring with a sleeve-shaped metal supporting housing in which two PTFE collars are secured on both sides of the sealing ring in order to seal off liquids of different viscosity. The sealing lip parts of the said collars each have at least one weak point, which determines the radial flexibility, this weak point being designed and arranged in such a way that the radial stiffness of the edge of the sealing lip of the collar facing the liquid of higher viscosity is less than that of the edge of the sealing lip of the other collar. Helical recirculation grooves are furthermore in each case provided in the convex sides of the two collars for the purpose of recirculation of the liquids.

The shaft sealing ring (1) has an internal seal lip (3) which is provided with radial contact pressure by a coil spring ring (4). An axial shroud attaches the seal lip body to the internal radial flange of a metal mounting ring (2). The outside of the mounting ring, which has a rectangular profile, is provided with two layers (5, 6). The inner layer (5) is an elastic coating, made of plastics or an elastomer. The outlet layer (6), also of plastics, provides a low friction surface that has high abrasive resistance. The inner layer may be up to 0.5 mm thick, while the outer layer thickness may be up to 0.03mm.

The shaft sealing ring is for a machine housing split in the axial direction and sealed by a flat joint, particularly the crankcase of an internal-combustion engine. The outer periphery of the ring (4) is stepped in the plane of the join between the housing sections. The steps (7) can be formed by bosses (8) of smaller outer periphery, extending in the radial direction and whose height is roughly equal to the thickness of the flat seal. There can be a radial flange (9) where the outer periphery is smaller. The seal can be of elastic material such as rubber, with a stiffening ring vulcanised into it.
