In recording and/or detecting two different marking signals on or from a record carrier, a generator for marking signals comprises at least one pulse generator which supplies marking signals in the form of two marking-pulse trains M1 and M2 having the same frequency but having different duty factors with the values k and 1-k respectively, which differ from 0.5. A detection circuit for detecting marking signals detects the duty factor of a marking pulse train M1 or M2 respectively and which supplies a specific detection signal in conformity with its detected pulse train.

A video record system includes a record disk 12 and a read/write head 19. A signal to be recorded is received on line 15 and processed by a converter26 before being passed to the read/write head 19. A signal read from the disk 12 by the read/write head 19 is passed through a converter 30 and a digital signal processor 32 to a television 14. …In this video record system the length of a mark along a record track 20 on the disk 12 represents a four bit binary storage code block and the player/recorder system operates in eight-bit system code blocks. Thus, two marks on the disk represent a single system code block. The bits of the system code block are assigned to bit positions of the storage code blocks in such a way that there is a reduction in the affect in the associated system of errors in initially writing or subsequently reading a mark. The increments of mark length are also made non-constant to reduce the effect in the associated system of errors in mark length.

A still video signal is modulated to a PDM signal by a pulse duration modulator. The PDM signal is recorded by a perpendicular magnetic recording head on a recording medium of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy according to the perpendicular magnetic recording method. The PDM signal recorded on the recording medium is reproduced by a perpendicular magnetic reproducing head.

In a system for processing PCM signals and transmitting such signals over a channel, which system includes an input portion having a circuit for interleaving arriving data words and supplying the interleaved words to the input end of the channel, and an output portion having a circuit for de-interleaving the data words arriving at the output end of the channel so that the data words, after de-interleaving, are present in the sequence existing before interleaving, the interleaving circuit performs two successive interleaving operations on the arriving data words, and the de-interleaving circuit operates in a manner to complement the interleaving circuit.

Tape recording device in which a voltage level (Vx) at 15 is compared at 16 with a saw tooth time base signal to produce a square wave signal (C) for recording. The reading derives an output which is proportional to the ratio of the mark length (T1) to the wavelength (T2) of the square wave (C) which is thus independent of slow variations in tape drive speed, enabling use of a single tape drive.

A bitstream encoded in the Aiken or similar selfclocking code is converted to a binary waveform with clocking by apparatus including two spaced apart sensing devices which read the bitstream, a memory circuit for storing the data content of the portion of the bitstream disposed between the sensing devices, and logic circuitry jointly responsive to the memory and sensing devices for determining the data content of the present bit. Timing information is extracted from the bitstream by another logic circuit jointly responsive to the output of one sensing device and to the memory circuit. The apparatus permits conversion independent of reading speed variations.
