    • A horizontal window blind apparatus (10) is disclosed for selectively controlling light transfer through a window (12). The apparatus (10) includes a frame (14) disposed within the window (12) and a tab (16) movably connected to and supported by the frame (14), the tab (16) having a first and a second end (18, 20). A slat (22) has a front and a rear edge (24, 26), the rear edge (26) of the slat (22) being connected to the first end (18) of the tab (16) such that the slat (22) is cantilevered from the tab (16). A further slat (34) is disposed parallel relative to the slat (22), the further slat (34) having a further front and a further rear edge (36, 38). The further rear edge (38) of the further slat (34) is connected to the first extremity (30) of the further tab (28) such that the further slat (34) is cantilevered from the further tab (28). The arrangement is such that in operation of the apparatus, when the tabs (16, 28) supported by the frame (14) are moved, the slats (22, 34) cantilvered to the tabs (16, 28) are correspondingly moved for selectively controlling the light transfer through the window (12) and for facilitating cleaning of the slats (22, 34).

    • Rotary inlet/exhaust valve for internal combustion engines having seals employed to minimise gas leakage around cylindrical valve rotor (12) which rotates with a radial clearance gap within a receiving bore of the engine. Rotor (12) comprises a main cylindrical body (40) having a rectangular exhaust port (48) formed on the circumferential surface of rotor (12) with angular spacing from inlet port (46). Sealing elements (70, 80, 90) are received in respective grooves (60, 64, 68) formed on the circumferential surface and arranged to bridge the radial clearance gap to create over each discrete surface zone, discrete volume sectors that rotate with rotor (12). Each annular sealing element (70) consists of a pair of sealing rings. Rotor (12) incorporates a pressurizing system arranged to selectively direct a pressurized fluid in between each sealing ring pair (70) to bias the rings in axially opposite directions to prevent high pressure gases from breaking the seal between the flanks of sealing elements (70) and the end faces of sealing elements (80, 90). This prevents ring seals (70) from moving away from the side surfaces of groove (60), and hence away from the end faces of sealing elements (80, 90).

    • @ A tunnelling machine has a tunnel lining stage 10 including a pick-up device 34 for picking up concrete lining segments 12 from the floor of the tunnel and placing them in position radially around the tunnel.
      In order not to damage the segments when picking them up and in order to enable the pick-up device 34 place the segments directly in position butted up against already placed segments, the pick-up device comprises at least one suction pad (40) adapted to engage the segments and means for evacuating the suction pad to hold the segment against the segment.

    • A rotary valve (1) for an internal combustion engine, comprising a cylindrical valve rotor (2) having an inlet and an outlet port (3, 7) arranged in the circumferential surface thereof, and a plurality of sealing elements (13a, 13b, 14a-14f) mounted on the valve rotor (2) such as to subdivide the circumferential surface of the rotor body (2) to define discrete circumferential surface zones thereon, a predetermined one of the discrete surface zones being arranged such that, when the rotary valve (1) is received within a valve bore in a cylinder head of an engine and the sealing elements (13a, 13b, 14a-14f) of the rotary valve (1) abut on the valve bore surface, it periodically seals-off a transfer port in the cylinder head, for which the rotary valve (1) serves as closing and opening means, during at least part of the compression and combustion strokes performed in the engine, whereby air-fuel mixture compressed during the compression stroke and combustion gases created during combustion stroke are substantially prevented from passing into the inlet or outlet port (3, 7) of the valve (1) during these strokes.
