摘要： An antimicrobial composition that contains an antimicrobial agent and a sugar alcohol is provided. The sugar alcohol is more generally more biocompatible and biodegradable than the antimicrobial agent. In addition, without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that sugar alcohols increase the attraction of the antimicrobial agent to microorganisms (e.g., the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria). Because a greater percentage of the antimicrobial agent molecules are brought into contact with the microorganisms, the efficiency of growth inhibition is increased. Thus, the antimicrobial composition provides good efficacy without the need for high levels of an antimicrobial agent.

摘要： A vaginal treatment composition that rapidly forms a gel when placed into contact with monovalent or polyvalent cations, such as sodium (Na+) and calcium (Ca2+) cations naturally found in vaginal mucosa, is provided. The gel may form in less than about 1 hour, in some embodiments less than about 1 minute, and in some embodiments, less than about 30 seconds. Among other things, such rapid gelation reduces the likelihood of leakage during use. In addition, because the gel may form intravaginally, it is more likely to retain its structure and shape over an extended period of time. In this manner, the gel may provide the prolonged release of a therapeutic agent that inhibits and/or treats vaginal infection. For instance, the gel may remain within the vagina for about 2 to about 48 hours to provide the desired effect.

摘要： A biodegradable biodelivery device is disclosed. The biodelivery device is formed from a polymer comprising the reaction product of a polyol and a polyacid. When exposed to water, the polymer degrades through hydrolysis. Of particular advantage, the polymer can be formed so as to be elastic and flexible. In one embodiment, the polymer is formed into a vaginal insert. As the polymer degrades, the polymer releases acid to a vaginal environment for decreasing the pH of the environment.

The therapeutic agent is capable of inhibiting and/or killing Gardnerella (e.g., Gardnerella vaginalis), Candida (e.g., Candida albicans), and/or Trichomonas (e.g., Trichomonas vaginalis) pathogens. Desirably, such antimicrobial efficacy is achieved without substantially inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus. For instance, sugars and/or sugar alcohols may be employed in the present invention as a therapeutic agent for inhibiting and/or treating vaginal infection. In one particular embodiment, D-xylitol is used as the therapeutic agent.

摘要： The invention provides a method for treating and/or preventing a wide scope of vaginal and vulval infections, such as those caused by bacteria, parasites or yeasts, by administering gallic acid to a subject in need of treatment. A composition containing gallic acid for treating vaginal infections is also disclosed. It has been found that gallic acid is capable of selectively inhibiting the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis, a parasite that causes trichomonas vaginitis; Gardnerella vaginalis, a bacterium that causes bacterial vaginosis; and Candida albicans, a yeast that causes candidiasis and vulvitis; while not inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus, the dominant bacteria in a healthy vaginal ecosystem. Gallic acid is safe and cost-effective, and can be used alone or incorporated into different vaginal health products to treat and/or prevent vaginal infections.

The composition includes water soluble PEO/PEG polymers which may be hydrophilic or amphiphilic block copolymers. One example of a suitable composition is polyethylene glycol or polyethylene oxide with a chemical formula of H—(OCH2CH2)n-OH. Another example of a suitable composition is amphiphilic block copolymer with a chemical formula PEOm-Xp-PEOn, where PEO is —(OCH2CH2)n-O and X is PPO(—(OCH2CH2CH2)m-), or PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), or PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), or PBO (polybutylene oxide). The pathogenic microorganism may be a bacterial, fungal, viral or trichomonial pathogen and the composition prevents adherence of the pathogenic microorganism in, for example, a urogenital tract of a mammal and aids in reducing malodor generation. The composition may be applied to vaginal health products like, for example, moisturizer, gel, jelly, cream, insert (tablet), ointment, foam. The composition may also be applied to a feminine hygiene product, like, for example, a tampon, feminine pad, feminine wipe or panty liners.
